    Having trouble. Please help.

When I try to playback a certain .avi in Windows Media Player, it doesn't work. It shows "Sending request for codec", and then "Error downloading codec". Windows Media Player then plays the movie as an audio file with no video. I have the latest version of DivX. Can someone help me please?

    Thank you in advance.

In order to determine which codec(s) you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

    1) Load the file into VirtualDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

        1. Open Virtualdub
        2. Go to File -> Open video File... -> Select your video

Follow the rest of Setarip's instructions.

          Here's what happens:

When I try to open the video in VirtualDub, a pop-up message comes up:
          --------------------------------------
Couldn't locate decompressor format 'DIV2' (unknown)

VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
          --------------------------------------

I can't get to the "File Information" section. So, what do I do?

                  I went to this site:

ffdshow is DirectShow and VFW codec for decoding/encoding many video and audio formats, including DivX and XviD movies using libavcodec, xvid and…

I downloaded ffdshow-alpha, but my video still won't work!

what did you change in addition to using ffdshow??

                      restarting your machine?

Actually, it was easier than that. It asked me if I wanted to install certain codecs (DivX, etc.), and I failed to check the boxes that installed the codecs I needed. Silly me!
