Divx starts stuttering after 40-50 minutes of playback

Hi,

When I play a divx file, video starts stuttering after 40-50 minustes of playback (generally 46 minutes)
Before that, video is smooth
Here are my system specs :
XP 1700
512 Mb RAM
WIN XP
And plenty of space left on my HD

I tried reinstalling divx codecs, using ffdshow instead.
I tried to unplug my webcam but there was no improvement

Memory usage is normal, CPU load is 20-30% (it goes a bit crazy when video starts stuttering, but never reaches 100%)

I have no system management tool installed, such as defragmenting tools, antivirus...
I have DSL (USB Speedtouch Home) and I use ZoneAlarm.

The problem appeared suddenly, and I can't link it to any system modification...

When video starts stuttering, I have to close the player (bsplayer, or WMP, whatever...) and start it again where it started to stutter. And it plays OK for 40-50 other minutes.

You might want to check to see if your system is possibly overheating.

This could have been the answer but if I close the player and start it right back the problem disappears ( for 40-50 minutes and it happens again)

That's why I think it's not a temperature issue

have you recently installed the DivX v.5.03 codec? Or an Xvid codec?

I reinstalled the last divx codec when I noticed the problem (the divx 5.03).
I also tried to install ffdshow
But I don't know what is xvid. I have the xvid.dll in my system files, but I have no idea of where it comes from...

Are there compatibilty issues with xvid and divx or ffdshow?

there are several postings at this forum indicating that the v.5.03 codec is "problematic". I'd suggest you read through the postings and then consider regressing to the previous version (v.5.02)...

I'll consider downgrading to 5.02 but as I already said I can't link the problem to any system modification.

Video started to stutter, so I installed 5.03, then ffdshow

I just have the screensaver started after 4 minutes of inactivity, and the monitor power-off after 5 minutes

Try turning off the screensaver and any energy efficency settings.

if I play the video in windowed mode, and I keep using my computer normally, the same thing happens....
