Stuttering from CD but OK from HD

    Hi All,
When I playback the very same divx file from the CD I´ve just recorded, it starts to stutter after a certain time, but if I playback from my Hard Drive everything works fine.
Anyone knows the reason for this?
    ThanX in advance!

    Try enabling DMA

It is possible that the CD drive is too slow for playing back the contents of the CD. Hardrrives are generally faster than optical drives and hence your not having problems playing back from HD.

Try enabling DMA as Batman suggested. In addition, you may want to make sure that the CD drive is not sharing the same IDE channel with the HD.

        Open the Control Panel
        Doubleclick on "System"
        Click on the "Performance" tab
Click on the "File System" radio button
        Click on the "CD-ROM" tab
Set "Supplemental Cache Size" to the extreme right ("Large")
Set "Optimize access pattern" to "Quad speed or higher"
        Click on "OK"

hello, i am having the same problem as this. the movies run fine from the HD but when running from my DVD/CDRW drive they produce this stutter effect every 10 seconds or so.

i'm running win2k, and the drive should be more than fast enough to run this kind of movie properly.

i've tried increasing the priority for the players and that reduces the stutter but doesn't eliminate it.

the other solutions you suggest i'm not sure how to do - i can't seem to find any settings for cache size, read patterns or DMA settings, for dvd/cd drives, in win2k.

one thing however, my DVD drive IS sharing the system drive's IDE cable. should i try putting it on the secondary? and why?

                  same thing here

I have the exact same problem. It stutters when it's from the drive, but on from pc. Someone told me to enable DMA, but the problem is that I can't. There is no such checkbox for it as I have for the other 2 drives. I attached a screenshot so you can see what i mean.

You go into IDE/ATAPI controllers. I don't see it on there (is that WinXP?) but find something that looks like Primary/Secondary IDE Channel. Then you need to figure out which channel your drive is connected to and if it is the master or slave drive, and then see what mode it is. If it's PIO, uninstall that channel and reboot and hopefully, under WinXP, it will automatically reinstall and give you DMA mode.

                    >> one thing however, my DVD drive IS sharing the system drive's IDE cable. should i try putting it on the secondary? and why?

You could try, I've heard hard drive and CD drive should go on its own separate channels.

If the CD/DVD is poorly burned or has scratches, I think that will cause stuttering, too, as the drive must reread the same area if it couldn't read it the first time around.
