black or grey screen when viewing a movie

whenever i try to watch a ms mpeg4 vv3 movie i can hear the audio but the picture is a solid black. what do i need to do to fix this problem? do i need to download a different codec?

What is the codec that you installed previous to this? I suggest you get a codec pack which has many codecs that should suit your needs. Try the Nimo Codec Pack.

i've already installed the nimo codec pack. and divx 5.0.3 and divx 3.11 alpha

What program are you using to view the movie now? Try using BSPlayer.

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

He hears the sound so your possibility is ruled out...

yeah, i guess that it does rule it out... i have had a similar problem, and it worked on the better computer of our network.
try the video on a better/faster computer. i have had this experience with only xvid files.

i've previously played the files that are now doing this. i don't know what happened since they've last worked.

also, i've noticed that it plays fine in virtual dub. i.e. i can see the picture. but it still will not work in other programs.

Either install this codec, or use a FourCC changer program to change the code to that of the DivX v.3.11alpha codec...


(As a last resort, since you've indicated that VirtualDub handles the video properly, you could always use VirtualDub to recompress the video using the DivX codec[s] available from within VirtualDub. Of course, this will result in a quality reduction of some degree.)
