    problem with codecs

Hi, could anyone help me please. I've tried to play my avi files on divx5.0.3 bundle and it causes an illegal operation while installing. It still opens but won't play avi's, but plays mpgs. I've tried avipreview and that won't work either. I get sound and a message saying that I haven't got the correct codec. What codec do I need? Even media player 9 won't play them and everyone tells me it should.

I have sound only, no picture with Media player trys to download codec but fails, bsplayer sound,no pic, and error in divxdec.ax. Divx 5.0.3 bundle has an error in 2.0 Alpha.exe. and replays the same sounds.

I've reread the thread on no sound no video and I'm not sure what part is relavant to my problem. Could you tell me please?

I know the files do play as they used to play before I put in new hard drive and more ram. I know this can't cause the problem (I think!!!) The files work on a friends pc as I played them on theirs to test them, to make sure nothing happened when I copied them. So I know they aren't fake files.

I'll try the divx 3.11 alpha and see if that helps and check back here to see if there are any more suggestions.

Please, please, please could someone suggest somethng?

In order to determine which codec(s) you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

        1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDub or NanDub

        2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

        3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

Tried virtual Dub and this keeps happening!

          Crash reason: Illegal instruction

          Crash context:
A Pentium Pro instruction not supported by the CPU was executed in module 'DIVX'...

...while attempting codec negotiation: fccHandler=0x78766964, biCompression=0x30355844 (VideoSource.cpp:571). There was a load of other info when I looked at advances but I thought it would takes hours to read!!!

Some good news though, I've got media player and bsplayer working. I downloaded nimo codec pack, something I overlooked when I was putting everything back on the pc. Us pc blonds eh!!! lol Nevermind, I'm learning loads though.

Just got to sort out the divx player now and it will all be sorted.
Shall I give up and uninstall the divx player or have you any suggestions on getting virtual Dub to work?

Thanx for taking the time to answer my questions and help with the problems. I am truely grateful.

GSPOT might help you determine what kind of codec was used for this file.

if VD does not work, however, the file may be corrupt.

you may backup your file and try *repairing* it with DIVFIX

Thanks for replying to my questions.

I'm not sure what I did last night and thought they were working again. I think I could have opened the new download same name but an mpg. I did say I was a pc blond!!!

So I'm back to square one.

I tried gspot and that had an illegal operation divx.dll if that means any thing. I've just found divfix so I'll try that.

One question though. I have several avi files and they work on other pcs but not mine. Therefore I would have thought that couldn't be corrupted.

you will understand, we will need some proof for this statement

maybe you will need to install some coecs/filters
click my second picture, download Tsunami 397 from my page, install it via CUSTOM routine, keep all defaults, reboot

that should provide aou with the most common codecs available
