Divx video works fine before installing 5.03 codec

I have windowsme, and when I try to play an avi file after installing the codec 4.12 videos work fine without a problem in windows media player, but I upgrade to 5.03 codec and I get no video and just a grey screen, but when I watch the avi file in the divx video player, I get no problems at all. ALso when the 5.03 codec was installing I would get an unknown error from windows about divx.dll. I think the problem is right there with the divx.dll. B/c I can't configure the divx program either. I get some sort of error which tomorrow I can explain.

i thiink i have an idea of what you are saying.
what happens is sometimes WMP doesnt close properly or windows is still using the divx.dll file in the background for some unknown purposes (maybe for generating previews) check the processes in the taskbar to find out.
so when you try to update the file you cant..because its still being accessed, dont forget divx 4 was hacked version and was totally illegal acc to M$ (ya right ) .
so remove divx 4.02 from your system, reboot and install divx 5.0.2, this should fix your problem.

I removed divx 4.x, and reboot the computer and try to reinstall divx, but I still get the error in windows.
