Force DivX 5.0.5 codec to play XviD encoded movies

how can i force the divx 5.0.5 codec to play xvid encoded files by default?
when i play xvid movies, the video gets too slow, no matter what i do (i an old machine - PII-350, 160 Mb ram, win2k).
copying the file from the cd to the hd and changing its fourcc code from xvid to divx solves my problem, since the divx 5.x codec is able to decode xvid movies, and this way my playback is ok.
i don't want to copy the xvid files from the cd to the hd everytime i want to watch them, and it would be expensive and time consuming to burn them to a cd again with the fourcc code changed.
i tried to rename some .dll and .ax files with no success. tried to change some registry settings also, but again, with no success.
so, how can i make divx codec to decode xvid files automatically?

simply because when i play the xvid movies using the xvid codec, and i mean any xvid codec (nic's, koepi's, umaniac's - any version), the movie freezes, slows down, and the sound is not sync with it.
btw, i already use divx antifreeze.

any other suggestions?

Try FFDShow. It can decode XviD, DivX and other MPEG-4 compression formats, while being relatively light-weight on resources.

Seriously though, it is going to be hard to get decent framerates out of a 350MHz CPU. In addition to using FFDShow, try the following:
1. Lower Desktop resolution and colour depth to 800x600 and 16-bit.
2. Disable Post-processing
3. Use a light player such as Windows Media Player 6.4 (run "mplayer2.exe" from the Run command).

well, until last year i was using a celeron 333, 64mb ram, and sis 8mb video card.....

i could play divx disabling post processing at original size without any zoom, while i find that setting to 16 bit lowers quality too much.

i just installed today ffdshow and it solved my problem that i could not play xvid full screen,

but then i could not play divx full screen!
ffdshow fixed xvid transfering probs to divx, so i just set it to decode only xvid.

ffdshow got plenty of features that id like to use with every format,
even i still didnt figure out how these features are working, resizing eg.

Unfortunately no.

But it shouldn't take a genius to find out how to use FFDShow's features. The Readme should provide a good starting point (if there is one; I never bothered with searching for a manual anyway).
