Need to get 16:9 DivX playback

Does anyone know how it is possible to change the DivX playback to a widescreen format.

When I start playback (Windows Media Player) the picture is clearly distorted and everything is taller than it should be. It seems that it should be in 16:9, but playback is in 4:3, and that doesn't make for a very pleasant viewing experience

Does anyone know how this can be fixed.

    Thanks for all help...

WMP usually plays avi's useing square pixels, since avi's can't contain information about aspect ratios. So the movie has probably been inproperly encoded, perhaps from a DVD source which doesn't use square pixels.

You can use zoom player to dynamically stretch the picture to any format you like.
Donate your idle CPU time for something usefull.

The original .AVI probably was created with the top and bottom "black bars" cropped off (in order to reduce filesize). You could use VirtualDub to reestablish the bars - but this procedure includes compressing the video again, which will somewhat diminish the quality.

      1) Load the .AVI into VirtualDub
      2) Set "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
      3) Set "Video" to "Full Processing Mode"
      4) From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Compression" and select the same codec and settings that were used for the original .AVI
      5) From under the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Filters"
      6) Click on the "Add" radio button
      7) Doubleclick on the "Resize" filter
      8) Under "New width and height" enter the dimensions of your cropped video (e.g. 720x440)
      9) Select "Precise bicubic"
      10) Put a checkmark in "Expand frame and letterbox image"
      11) Set "frame width" and "frame height" to the probable uncropped ORIGINAL dimensions (e.g. 720x480)
      12) Click on "OK" (brings you back to primary "Filters" screen" and then click on "OK" (to get back to main VirtualDub screen)
      13) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "Save AVI" and save with a NEW filename

        @ setarip

let me quote you from another posting:

So how would your suggestion be beneficial

He/She already has a perfectly good working compressed video on the hard drive. Any additional conversion will, at best, diminish the quality...

        @ wavesurf

dont reencode but use a player like khp has already suggested to correct the faulty aspect ratio.
zoomplayer or media player classic will let you do so.

          To UncasMS

The original poster's question here was, "When I start playback (Windows Media Player) the picture is clearly distorted and everything is taller than it should be... Does anyone know how this can be fixed."

I have provided a method for FIXING the file.

          Perhaps you've had a long day (Feel free to continue sniping) ;>}

Perhaps you've had a long day

i guess you must know how it feels

maybe think about the way you reply to other posters as well?

btw how yould you know, how the threadstarter defines FIXING?

diminishing quality due to adivising to reencode isnt my idea of fixing.

Thanks to everyone for their help.

Just to settle the debate above When I talk about fixing I mean ANY way to get me to view the movie with the normal aspect ratio, so both were acceptable to me

              Thanks again...
