    AVI Playback prob - please help - have codecs already! still problem

    I have some AVI files (6 different files) that cannot be played in any of my players. A still picture appears in the file thumbnail but when I play the file - after the still pic is loaded the player gives a warning message "must close would you like to report this to Microsoft"

    I used GSpot to check these files and:
    1. I have the codecs
    2. Directshow rendering is successful

    Here is Gspot info from an example file movie.CD2.AC3.DVL.ShareReactor.avi:

    file length correct

    VIDEO: div3, div-x 3 low-motion
    2 compatible codecs installed - divX decoder filter (listed twice)
    bitrate: 1203 kb/s, fps: 23.976, Qf: 0.223 bits/pixel

    AUDIO:
    codec: ac3 (0x2000) Dolby Laboratories, Inc
    2 compatible codecs installed - Nero Digital Audio Decoder,
    -> AC3 from AVI XForm -> Nero Digital Audio Decoder
    bitrate: 448 kb/s (5 ch) CBR, Fs: 48000 Hz

    Directshow Render:
    video src: 4cc: DIV3, audio src: DOLBY_AC3
    video path: (S) --> AVI Splitter --> DivX Decoder Filter --> (R)
    audio path: (S) --> AVI Splitter --> AC3 from AVI XForm --> AC3 Prologic Decoder --> (R)

    Does anyone have any idea how I can get around this? Should I try to convert the files to another format? Is this a conflict as the result of two codecs being able to play audio and video?

    I'm a newbee and could really use the help. I know these are good files and it would be a shame to delete them before I try to work out the problem.

    "I have some AVI files (6 different files) that cannot be played in any of my players."

    "I know these are good files "

    If you are unable to play these files, how do you "know" they are good?

      I don't know that they're good for sure. I can tell that they aren't fakes-I meant. For example sometimes it runs a few seconds after the error message. It seems too much of a coincidence that files from different sources from different weeks don't work. Also based on Gspot - I should be able to play them.

      I figured it's something pretty easy - that I'm just missing. I would be gratefull for any advice you can give me.

        Talk about all other file container formats and video codecs in this forum, including Ogg, RMVB, MOV, ASF, WMV ...

          still doesn't work after ffdshow download

          The file still doesn't work. Is there a way I can tell if codecs are interfering with another? - Note Gspot data for files is given above.
