    Burn DVD to CD-R?

I was thinking that it may be possible to burn DVD quality video (say 20 minutes) to a CD-R. (Not SVCD)

I've tried to burn this to a CD-R as a DVD, but of course, the software says my media is wrong. (says it's CD-R not DVD-R)

I've also tried to burn the AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS directories to the CD-R as data, but it won't play on my DVD player.

Mind you, when I did this, the DVD player did spin the disc, and actually play, but there was no video or audio. I suppose in order to get this much data off a CD-R to play the video correctly, the CD must spin at a faster speed..... this may be OK for a computer with multi speed drives, but I guess a DVD player will only spin at certain speeds.

I think that most, if not all DVD players, will not be able to play such a CD-Rs.

Anybody have some comments or suggestions?

    One other question:

If you have the AUDIO_TS & VIDEO_TS directories all in the correct format, and you just burn them to a blank DVD-R, they will not work in a DVD player. Is that because you have to burn them as a DVD, so that it puts a "label" or similar onto the DVD-R to tell the DVD player that it's a DVD movie??

i've used nero 6 to do this.
    i open nero smart start
click on the cd tab in the right top corner
    click on make mini dvd
nero makes the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder
add your video file to the VIDEO_TS folder
my Apex 500 dvd player plays these cdr mini dvd videos without any problem. i think alot has to do with the dvd player

yep. i've made alot of mini dvd's on cdr's and they play fine. I haven't tried it yet but i think you could use an authoring program ( i use TMPGenc DVD Author ) and add titles etc. as long as you keep the results within the limits of a cdr capacity. I might try this myself as i'm always curious as to what works and what doesn't. I use cdr's to make small samples to save on the cost of DVD media to see what i like or want than put my large finished product on DVD. check at www.dvdrhelp to see what your DVD player compatibility is or try your own samples. I usually put 4 or more small samples on cdr at 1 time then play each on my stand alone dvd player to see what i like best. hope this helps. good luck and be creative.

          Thanks!!!!

The standard Nero 6 doesn't support DVDs so I guess I will need to get the DVD extension or Nero 6 Smart Start??

Of course it does. Just click on the down arrow to the right of "CD" in the box at the upper left of the "New Compilation" window...

Interesting......... I've reinstalled Nero 6 but this time over the top of Nero 5. Previously there was no DVD support, but now there is, which is odd.

Anyway, I've got the full set of DVD tools.

I also noticed that the "Mini DVD" option under "CD" didn't appear until I put a CD into my DVD burner!!!!! It's there all the time now.

I've burned a "mini DVD" onto a 99min CD, and it works OK in a few other DVD players..... it doesn't work in my Pioneer DVD 535K, however.

                Thanks for your help.

It all depends upon the implementation of the player's playback program. Due to restrictions, from the DVD forum I pressume, a dvd player mustn't be able to playback DVD content on a CD. That why almost all standalones check the media inserted and if a CD is found they launch the VCD or Audio CD player otherwise they r checking for DVD Media and launch the DVD player instead.

Sampo and its clones, such as Affrey, were the first one to actually permit playback of DVD content on CD media.
