    is my computer to slow?

    Hi
Im new at this and I have absolutely no idea of what I'm doing wrong. Thankful for any help

Just bought a tv-card to be able to capture some old vhs movies and burn them to dvd. I tried the software that I got with the card that supposed to encode to mpeg2 in realtime. It worked well when i captured in lower quality but when I captured in higher resoloution the movie didnt run smooth.

I used a different program to capture to avi, no frameloss occured. Then I tried TMPGenc to encode the movie to dvd-format....same problem. The movie runs for a couple of seconds, then it freezes..then scips a second or so.

Is my computer to slow to encode movies at higher resolutions?
    This is my configuration:

AMD Athlon 2100+ on motherboard Asus A7V333
    256 mb ram
Capture card is AVerTv Studio 303

A couple of things to look out for.
As I said in your other thread, be careful of what else you're running while you're streaming the video into the PC, especially anything that's file accessing.
Make sure your hard drive DMA is turned on. Defragmenting the drive might make access quicker.
Try encoding and authoring the DVD structure to a folder and testing in a software player before committing to a DVD and then try it on a ±RW first.
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

setarip - if you are so sure, what the heck am I doing wrong then?

sfheath - I tried again, after shutting down all programs that I didn't need running i the background...but i didnt notice any difference. Also, the problem dosent seem to be in the ripping process. Captureing the movie at high resolution to avi works just great. The movie runs smooth but the filesize is gigantic. But after encoding to mpeg2 (I guess is the dvd format) the movie gets really bad.
Is encoding more demanding than ripping? Does frameloss occur when you're encoding?

        Sorry for stupid questions

Don't worry about gigantic file sizes - in this game it's part of the territory. I guess with your processor the streaming from the video isn't going to be too strenuous but encoding is heavy on processors. I believe there's a priority setting you can adjust in TMPGEnc? I only use the DVD Author myself. I would raise it.

I can't think of what else to try except economising on perhaps bitrate. You might attract more attention if you posted this under DVD, Authoring. Try also a search on "capture"

          Stupid questions? didn't see any!

ok, found out the problem. It had nothing to do with capturing or encoding at all. It seems like the created dvd-files was too hard to be playbacked by my windows mediaplayer.
I accedently played my encoded file in a different player and it worked just fine...so it probably will on my dvdplayer to.
            DOH!
Well at least a learned allot along the way...

Thanks allot for your help and showing of interest sfheath.
Think I'll have to invest in a larger hd yes..
