Ok, so I'm posting this in the Xvid forum because my problem is similar to several people's in here, which leads me to suspect my problem concerns the Xvid codec. I'm running XP, for people's information. I downloaded an .avi file which I'm assured is not corrupt by the person I downloaded it from. Windows Explorer crashes everytime I even highlight the file's icon, or try to atler it in any way. Divx and Windows Media player also crash if I try to open the file with them. VirtualDub and TMpeg don't recognize the file. Gspot doesn't either. They all say it is not a recognizable format/not an .avi file. I tried uninstalling Xvid, reinstalling it, installing ffdshow (which I did not have when I started having this problem) I have also tried editing the registry to remove the default value so it doesn't show the avi preview. None of these things worked. Now again, I dont' know any information about this file, so I can't say whether it is actually an Xvid file or not. But I suspect it is, judging from the similar type problems that other people have been having in this forum. Can anyone help me?
Doesn't recognize file as AVI

welcome to the forum.
the last thing I would try is to playback that file
with the VLC player also known as video lan client.
it uses its own direct show devices to play back a movie
if this one doesn't play your file either,
throw it into your garbage can.

try Avicodec and see if it will open the file and give the info
you can also try opening and fixing it with divfixComment
