Playback of movies jumps forward randomly

When I'm watching a DivX or XviD file (regardless of player) it will jump forward a second or two every 10-15 mins. This is really annoying as I obviously miss vital parts of dialogue sometimes.

I have searched this and other forums but whenever i find posts of the same problem, there is never a resolve posted. People seem to fix it and not say how they did it!

So, I'm pleading with the knowledgeable out there, is this a common problem and is there an easy way to fix it? I have tried numerous combinations of codec, player and settings but i'm obviously missing something.

My pc is only a year old and more than capable so i don;t think it's a hardware issue.

Any light you may light on the prob would be great

p.s. there is also a smooth playback prob, it's as if holds a frame for a split second every second or so. this isn't noticable in action scenes but when the camera is panning, it looks jerky.

I have limited experience with DivX and XviD, but my guess is that your system can't keep up when playing fullscreen. Windows could be trying to re-index your drives, or some other background process is stealing CPU cycles. Most software players do there best to keep the audio and video in sync, if the video starts to fall behind the player will skip ahead to stay synced to the audio.

Open Task Manager, select the Performance tab and minimize it to your tray. Play one of the problem videos, keep an eye on the task manager icon and watch for spikes. If it is as I suspect, then you just need to find out what process is stealing the CPU cycles.

It happens when watching the vids in a window too, not just full screen.

And there are no spikes at all, but thanx for the advice, i was hoping that was the problem for a minute

        My specs...
        2.6ghz P4
        256MB RAM
        128MB Nvidia card
