i am cleaning up a friends computer and i noticed an AVI file on it. it is a decent size file.what is an avi file? it also gives a codec error. audio plays fine in windows media player but it seems like there should be images with it. is there a way i can convert this file?

avi is a containerformat that may contain different codecs for video and audio streams
you shouldnt convert the avi just because you're missing the correct codec for playing back the video content
search google for FFDSHOW (go for a new version) and install it

.avi file is a video file. It could be a short video clip, a movie trailer, or a entire movie.
To properly play some .avi files, you need both "audio" and "video" codecs. Apparently, you have the right "audio" codec, cause you hear sound. You just need to find the right "video" codec.
