    Load the file into VirtualDub

From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

If in the audio codec description you see "Unknown codec (tag2000)", this is indicative of an audiostream in .AC3 format.

I have VirtualDub 1.4.9. Where exactly should "Unknown codec (tag2000)" be written? Is it under "Compression: _________"?

One more thing. Is there somewhere on the net an example of AC3 Divx (maybe one movie trailer with AC3 sound), so that i know it is encoded with AC3?

        can you playback the file?

check properties within your player and tell us what is stated there!

setarip: thank you. I think i know where to look now.

uncasms: My problem was that i thought i have an AC3 file but now it looks like it is an ordinary MP3 audio encoded avi.

Can somebody please post a link to an example of AC3 encoded divx somewhere on the net. I tryed with google but no luck. All i got were different guides of How to make AC3 Divx, but no actual AC3 Divx files.

            Thank you

I would simply like to try AC3 Divx playback. I thought i had one AC3 encoded trailer, but it turned out it is not AC3 encoded. I would like to find one AC3 Divx file, whit which i could test if it works on my system.

Once you do track down such a file, you'll have to install (and register with Windows) a proper .AC3 audio filter, such as iviaudio.ax. Such filters are available in many of the codec "packs" at the DVDDigest and/or DivXDigest sites...
