    ac3 playback problem

I recently downloaded a divx movie where the video would play fine, but there was no audio. after perusing (sp.??) the boards, I went into virtualdub, looked at file information it said that the audio was unknown file format (tag 2000). figuring this was cuz i was lacking ac3 filters, i searched for iviaudio.ax and ivivideo.ax. i found iviaudio.ax but no ivivideo.ax so i DL'd the Nimo Codec Pack from divx-digest. the audio now works! yay! but.... *sigh* the audio has a sort of wah-wah effect. its sort of hard to describe but the audio incessiently fades in and out, creating a sort of wah-wah effect. what's the problem? why is the audio doign this? is it because the file is corrupt in some way or is it because of old/crappy ac3 filters?

    thx for all the help

"or is it because of old/crappy ac3 filters?"

The iviaudio.ax filter performs perfectly - and it's all that's needed to play .AC3 sound. The ivivideo.ax filter is only required for viewing MPEG2 video - it's not needed for DivX-compressed .AVIs...

ok well, last i posted everything seemed to be working ok...i left the comp running and went out to watch the Vancouver/Detroit game. when i came back, my comp was messed up. any time i tried to open an avi file in bsplayer, windvd, wmp7 and 6.4 they would report an unhandled exception and crash. tried reinstalling program software, didn't work. then uninstalled all divx codecs and reinstalled. now they work again, but i'm back to square one, since ac3 is not playing again now, iviaudio.ax is installed in my windows system directory and i tried watching the ac3 audio encoded movie in bsplayer and windvd, neither give audio... i've been installing my ac3 filters from a file I dl'd off of direct connect, an .exe that is 264kb in size. is something wrong with this file perhaps? where can i dl JUST the ac3 filter, no grouped in a codec pack? thx for all the help!

"iviaudio.ax is installed in my windows system directory"

Exactly what did you do to "install it"? If you merely placed the file in the Windows\System directory, it hasn't been installed.

For Win 98, create and then run a batch file (a text file with a .BAT extension) as follows:

        c:\windows\system\regsvr32 iviaudio.ax

For Win2000 make the extension .CMD

just want to first give a big thanks to setarip for his all his advice thus far on my technical issues...

          now to the good stuff!

iviaudio.ax was "installed" using a .bat file, sorry bout that i should have said it was "registered" with windows....

the bat file installed, crap! , registered iviaudio.ax mpgsomething.ax and mmsystem.ax

now, i found that mmsystem was what was creating the unhandled exceptions in bsplayer, microdvd and wmp7 and 6.4... dunno why, thought maybe it was because i had inadvertantly installed multiple versions when trying to get ac3 filter operational... so i removed mmsystem.ax from my windows/system directory. i do have a backup if this was a terrible mistake

out of curiosity, where did u guys get ur ac3 filters from? a codec pack? my nagging suspicion is that my problems stem from bad copies of the .ax filters required for ac3 playback. that's just my uneducated opinion...

          thx again to setarip!

maybe with our combined power we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy! uh... i mean to my computer...
