    plays the video, but with no sound!

    I have a problem with playing certain divx formatted video clips.
    All div3 and divx encoded movies/vids/etc. play normally, but div4 plays only the video (choppy) with no sound at all.

    I use WMP 7.1 and have tried codecs versions 3.11 alpha, 4.x and 5.x and still have had no luck in getting these to work.

    When I run these clips, which I have found to be all div4 encoded, it says "Media changing" as normal, but then says "locating server to download codec", "connecting to codec server" and then "downloading codec," then it starts playing the video with no sound.

    This seems like it could be a very common problem and I would really appreciate some help or a solution to this problem!

    1) Load the file into VirtualDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

      Thanks for suggesting this program. The "Unknown" Audio Compression method sounds like it could be the source of the problem.

        just another quick comment that I left out on the last post - ALL 8 of the vids that I am having problems with have the "Unknown (tag 0161)" for their audio compressor.

        That is likely the problem.

          That's the v.3.11 codec's hack of the WMA audio format (appears as "DivX Audio"), which gets installed when you install the codec. Since VirtualDub is indicating it to be "unknown", I'm guessing that you no longer have the v.3.11 codec installed on your system.

          A simple way to check is to once again load the file into VirtualDub. Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode". Under the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression". Scroll down the left-hand window and look for the aforementioned "DivX Audio". If it's not there, reinstall the v.3.11 codec.

          Let us know of your success ;>}

            Excellent. I had to re-install v3.11 and 4.12 to get it to work, but now it finds the audio compressor "DivX Audio"!

            But after that, what quality sound do I select? There is a large list of both mono and stereo sound, varying qualities, and a handful have "for DivX " beside them.

            A Few Examples:
            20kbps, 22khz, mono 3KB/s
            160kbps, 44khz, stereo 20KB/s
            64kbps, 44khz, stereo for DivX 8KB/s

              Now that you've definitely got the audio portion of the 3.11 codec package installed, just play the video and enjoy the sound ;>}

              If you find that you're still having the same problem, uninstall the v.4.12 codec, reboot your machine, reinstall the 4.12 codec and answer with a resounding "No!" when you're asked if you want the 4.12 codec to play v.3.11 files...

                  The audio codec is something named "ALF2" (alf2cd.acm)

                        Perhaps you can share a bit of information with us - Where did you obtain the obscure "ALF2" codec?

                            ok, on the same topic, i get the exact same stuff (all movies play, but one doesnt) and in virtual dub under audio stream compression i get "unknown (tag 2000)" but i DO have "DivX Audio" under the audio compression options. the strange thing is that "Screener.AC3.DivX" is appended to the end of the filename.
                            PLEASE help, i would soooo grateful

                              To bigdave

                              "unknown (tag 2000) is indicative of .AC3 audio. An appropriate .AC3 filter (iviaudio.ax or other) can be found in one of the many available codec "packs"...
