avi xvid to work in dvd player

HELP
im trying put videos to dvd but it will not work the first one i did went to disc and when i put it in the dvd player it said the name of the video but would not play it i tryed converting the file from avi xvid to mpeg2 but when played it was 23 hours long and played in slow mo and will not fit on disc now i can not put any thing to disc and my computer is running out of memory all the files will only work on xvid player

i dont know how you tried the conversion but maybe you might want to take a look at MEDIACODER
