How to seperate the Divx from non Divx

    Hey all,

I have found that I have problems trying to play some Divx Files using Windows Media Player. I tried to play one and it played with no color and had poor performance/playback. For instance I'd seek and it would take a while.

Then I tried the same file using DivX Player 2.0 and it played beautifully. Seek was almost instantaneous.

So what I'd like to do is have avi files still played using Windows Media but all files using the Divx Codec played using the DivX Player. I already have it associated with the .divx extention but what I need is a program that will go through all my AVIs and change the extention to the AVIs using Divx to .divx.

Does anyone know of such a program?

No one knows of a program to do this? Currently I'm saving any movie I encode using the DivX codec with a .divx extention but that doesn't help me with all the avi files I already have.

I'm running Windows XP and if I remember correctly, XP chooses Codecs in order so if a codec is found that CAN play it then it will which means even if I have a better codec down the line it won't be used as long as a codec exists before it or something like that.

So rather than be bothered with all that I can just use the DivX Player which plays them perfectly. WMP and other players have some trouble and I'm guessing its because they all use the same method as WMP is. Don't know really but my work-around for now is to have all DivX avi files use the .divx extention so that I can use DivX Player to play them.

You may want to check your system for problems, instead of going through this tedious work. Of the numerous systems on which I have played DivX files, none have given me any problems (apart from audio desynch. due to insufficient CPU power). What are your system configurations? We can start from there.

In my sig I have a link to my computer system profile. Describes the hardware setup and all that.

What it doesn't include is my codec setup. I'm using the Ace Mega Pack. I know some people don't like codec packs but I had problems that I simply could not fix after spending hours but after installing this pack they all disappeared. The ONLY problems I've had are poor mpeg performance with only certain mpegs and the DivX performance.

Now the Divx thing was really just an annoyance. The seek times while playing them in Windows Media Player were sometimes awful but this depended on the DivX file which leads me to believe that it's the DivX settings. However, when I played these same files using DivX they all played back great and seek times were beautiful.

Have you given either the Nimo or Tsunami codec packs a try? I find the both of them good and no problems so far.

Codec problems aside, have you made sure that you have setup your system right? Impressive a rig as it is, it won't mean a thing if it does not have the right drivers and patches.

I once tried the Tsunami codec pack and it royally screwed things up for me. I used to run Nimo and things ran fine and all but I had some other files that simply wouldn't play right. So that's when I switched to Ace Mega and it fixed ALL the troubles I'd been having and created only the mpeg performance trouble and only with some mpegs. When I look to see what codec WMP is using for them it's generic. LIke Morgan Stream Switcher and Mpeg Video Decoder. But when I load it into another proggie the codec is usually different. I gave up trying to fix this one. Last thing I'd tried was manually deleting the codec but I just caused problems and had to re-install the pack so I left it alone.

As for drivers and patches, I try to keep up to date but you never know. I just downloaded a newer version of the Ace Mega Pack and will install it soon. I have the latest graphics drivers and such. As for WMP I'm running version 8 and not sure about updates. Haven't checked in a while and will do so shortly.

Edit: Case in point. I just loaded up an mpeg. If I just let it play fine but I tried to seek forward and it froze up for almost 30 seconds and then finally resumed playing. I check file properties and it says Morgan Stream Switcher and Mpeg Video Decoder. I load up Adobe Premiere since it always correctly identifies the codec used but it had nothing listed. I then load it up under Virtual Dub and same thing, no codec listed. So I'm confused now. But I know that I can convert this file with Virtual Dub and produce a DivX which will play fine and if I want good seek times I'll have to use the DIvX Player for now anyway.

Actually, the sole reason I'm using these codec packs is simply because I need to have M$ MPEG4 codec installed. Otherwise, I would have happily made do with the individual installers for each DivX version. You see, the problem with people using codec packs is that they install too many things that they most probably will never need and yet will screw up something in their system. For me, whichever codec pack I use, the only things installed in my system are 3.11, 4.12 and M$ MPEG4. All else are ticked off. You should try doing the same.

I don't remember requiring any codecs for playing back MPEG-1 files. That is why I said not to install unnecessary things that will only create problems in your system.

I just made an edit to my previous post.

But yes I used to do the same, I'd install only the codec I needed. Problem is I collect a ton of files and so I need many codecs and some of them I simply couldn't find anywhere. Also I wanted to make sure I could handle any video file thrown my way and so far I have been able to. I've had to install a few codecs seperate from the pack that wasn't included but other than that things were ok.

I have files that use the Mpeg4 v2 codec in AVI files. I had to find a hack so I could play those and the hack only works with WMP 6.4 so that is what I have associated with my avi files. If I could find a way to play those files in WMP 8 I'd do it.

You don't actually need to install any codecs to play these files. The only catch is that you can't set the filter settings for the codec, but in the case of high-quality videos, you needn't be worried about that. I need to have MPEG4 V2 codec installed because I do some of my encodes with this compressor.

If you can tell me why those spaces are there I'd be happy to fix em. They're annoying to me as well. These spaces appear only here. I use this same signature, same copy and pasted code elsewhere and no spaces appeared.

Don't know if anybody answerded the original question (bored of reading after a few lines ) but I think that the option to rename all DivX-avis to *.divx was/is included in "The Playa".
