you will hardly be able to improve a poor quality source

Agreed! If the source is missing quality in the first place, you can't add to it very well. I have cleaned up old recordings with audio editing software using filters, eq, & more, but it really takes some work.

It can be 'listenable" to in the end, but you are still ending up with a greatly "fudged & manipulated" file. Better to see if you can re-record the source at a high quality to begin with.

      cheers, katz

        hi

thanks for your replys ok another couple of questions

when ripping would it be better to use 192 CBR or 192 VBR and would there be any benefit in re-encoding a 192 CBR into a 192 VBR

also when ripping i was wondering should i encode using joint stereo or regular stereo see when ripping i'm trying to produce as closely as i can an exact duplicate if the original song

see the reason I ask is because I like to wire my mp3 player up to my surround sound system so I'm trying to get a balance between it sounding grate on my surround sound system and sounding grate when being played normally on my head phones

VBR gives overall better quality than CBR at the same file size.

          no

          stick with regular stereo

if battery power isn't an issue, and your player supports it, you might consider using a lossless codec, eg ALAC or FLAC
