    problem with a sound codec

can somebody help me with this one?

i've just d/l Ali (2 CDs) and the video's fine but there is no sound:
in virtualdub it tells me there are "5 channels (stereo)", the sample precision is of "0-bit" and the compression is "Unknown (tag 2000)" and there is a preload skew of "28000 samples (0.58 s)" (this comes from the "file info" from the "file" menu
i've tried ripping the audio to a wav (about 250megs) but it doesn't play (i've tried winamp: "missing codec, unable to open file"). i've also tried changing the sound under virtualdub (changing the compression, the sample rate, the precision...) but it keeps telling me:
"The requested audio compression is not compatible with the input format. Check that the sampling rate and channel count of the imput match those of the requested format."

i'm just giving as much info as possible cos i'm not sure what's usefull or not.
thx to anyone who responds to this!

you're dealing with AC3 - the original dolby digital sound stream.

install a software dvd player like powerdvd or any filterpack like tsunami or nimo and make sure you pick ac3 codecs!
