I just encoded some mpeg files to divx 3.11 and mp3 audio compressions soI could get them smaller in size. When I play them back at the begining the audio is in sync but as they progress it gets slowly out of sync. Can I fix this by extracting the audio with Virtualdub to wav and then re adding it in an re compressing to mp3? Or how would I fix this?

It's possible that your system is barely capable of running the encoded mpeg files, esp. if you have a low-MHz CPU and high-resolution video.
I have a
