    Slow Playback of DivX Movies

    Hey all

I'm having a problem viewing some movies I encoded into DivX 5.
The video in WMP (6.4 & XP) only plays at a maximum of around 20 FPS. The result is obviously that the video and the audio get very very out of sync after a very short period of time. The original DVDs playback at 25 FPS. I have not changed the framerate during the encoding. Everything (that includes VirtualDub) reports that the movies are supposed to be at 25 FPS.
When these movies are played with The Playa, this problem does not seem to be as severe.

    Movies:
    - The Matrix: encoded using DVD2AVI 1.77.3, DivX 5 Pro 2-pass at 1355 kbps
    - South Park Vol. 3: encoded using FlasKMPEG 0.6 DivX 5 Pro 2-pass at 1150 kbps

    System:
    - Pentium 4, 256 RAM, Win XP, 'nuff said

In wmp6.4 select File->Properties->advanced->'divx decoder filter'->'quality settings', and enable yuv extended mode and overlay extended mode.

Restart wmp6.4 and select File->Properties->advanced->'divx decoder filter' and move the quality slider to Min.

One other thing, did you encode with forcefilm enabled in DVD2AVI ?.

Forcefilm must be turned off when encoding Pal movies.

I have a similar problem, i have a 30 fps movie but the player never plays faster than 28 fps, it was made from a 30fps DVD NTSC 100% film deinterlaced. My question is, not having used force film causes this ?? What can I do to solve this. I deinterlaced the film using Field Deinterlace in Gknot 0.26. I had no such problems with a 24 fps DVD using force film (99 % film NTSC) with no field operation (this one was not interlaced)

No, I don't think so. But I have next to no experience with NTSC DVD's, so I don't really know what to tell you.

In my first post, in this thread, I have stated the optimal playback settings (speed wise).

Other than than you might try changeing the fps setting in the avi file, as descriped in this guide.

The problem is there is a huge difference (6 fps) so changing the FPS setting won't help here, I'll be seeing it in low motion. The only solution is to select 24 out of this 30 and play only these one, which means re-encoding it at 24 fps, I'm afraid. An option which VirtualDub, as far as I know, doesn't have.

                  No, I did not.

Thanks for the help. Everything is running smoothly now.

the same divx clips will generally have twice as many fps in windows me VS windows xp on my machine.

That is most likely because of different post processing settings, Which player are you using ? wmp7/8 are crap because they don't allow you to change the filter settings.

Use a player that allows you to change these settings, like wmp6.4, BS Player or Zoom Player. Use the Settings I posted. And you should get, equal playback in both OS'es.

Ofcourse this assumes, that you have not crippled the XP system, with outdated drivers, and all the 'features' that comes with WinXP.

I'am talking about the optimal settings for divx5.0.2 playback.

This is completly unrelated to DVD players, I don't own one either.

ok, you convinced me. I disabled the default v7 WMP installed by winME and installed 6.4. I'll play around with the filters now.
