Converting .AVI file to DVD compatibility

Hey guys:

I have an .avi movie that I got from a friend. It's in .avi format. Is there a way to convert the file to either the Dvd file format or Dvd .Iso image format?? I would like to be able to Shrink it(DvdShrink) and burn it with Image burn. I'm don't know what programs can convert this??

how big is this avi? there are a multitude of programs that you can use to do this...

Columbo will surely suggest this:
Use TMPGEnc Plus to make DVD compliant MPEG2 files.Then use TMPGenc DVD Author to make the DVD.Then burn the Video_TS using Nero.U can also use Imgtool Classic to make an ISO file from Video_TS and then burn it using Imgburn.

I am also having this same problem I have ripped the Video from an old camcorder and and converted the .avi into MPEG1 then used AVS video converter to convert to a DVD format. The quality sucks and it only plays on my sons cheap DVD player it wil not plan on mine.

So is the Key converting to MPEG2 vs MPEG1?

I have not tried the other programs that are listed in the last link I will check that out and see if that will make the difference.

Thanks for the quick replies!!! LT. Columbo: The .avi file is 699 MB. There are 2 separate .avi files (approximately the same size) that I would like to first combine and then convert. I'll check out the programs and the guide you sent over.

converted the .avi into MPEG1 then used AVS video converter to convert to a DVD format.

Each time u convert from one format to another ,there is a loss of quality.If ur aim is to make a dvd then u must encode the avi to dvd compliant mpeg2 first.Moreover,the final quality depends on the quality of ur captured video.So it is very important that u capture at a fairly good quality.Uncompressed avi would be best,but not practicable for long videos due to very large file size.I would suggest MJPEG codec.

for the BEST results (and easier too) you convert them first seperately and when you get to the authoring stage i'll show you how to join them....

Ok Guys:

I never used this program and I can't seem to open the .avi file in the program. It says, "C:\...FW1of2.avi" can not open, or unsupported.

I don't know if my settings are wrong or if the .avi just won't work with TMPGEnc Plus. What do you think?

STEP 2: Open TMPgenc Plus, the wizard will open. Close it. The first thing you need to do:

Go to the TMPGEnc's Option menu and select Environmental settings. From there, select the
VFAPI Plug-in tab.

There you see a list of various reader plugins installed for the TMPGEnc. The one that's called DirectShow Multimedia File Reader is the one that we're looking at. As a default, its priority is -1. Select the item and right click on it. Choose Higher priority and repeat this until the "Priority" for this item is higher than any other plugin's priority in the list (usually 2). LEAVE this set always. I have found 50% of files won’t even open or produce write stream errros unless this is set.

when that's done, and if it still doesn't open, you'll need to post the file information using virtualdub (in link too)

Update:

I upped the priority of Directshow Multimedia File Reader to 2. That seems to have done the trick. Amazing what a little reading can do!!!! (Sorry about that.) The frame rate is 14 frames per second. That doesn't match any of the settings in the program. Is this going to give me a crappy burn??

What should I try?

14 hey? well you don't have a standard frame rate , and i bet the file itself isn't very good quality and kind of choppy playback. just use the NTSC dvd template for 29.97fps--it don't matter since the input isn't a standard framerate.

I ran through everything else in the program according to your guide.When I hit OK for start encoding immediately, I got TMPGEnc.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. I did it two times.

i knew this would happen too. this is important, we need to see the file info of this thing---i guarantee you, you can get this on dvd. right click>properties>summary tab. we need to see that screenshot. (example in the first screenshot in guide)

Some warnings were issued during the previous operation.
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'MP43'{Microsoft High-Speed MPEG-4V3}. VirtualDub requires a Video for Windows {VFW} compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable. Only 'Direct stream copy' is available for this video.

Not sure what the next step is.
