    Stats:

For the week ending December 31st 2016, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 37.17% vs 62.83%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $35.01 million
DVD sales total spending: $59.19 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

With Christmas Day being part of the week, the last week of 2016 was a relatively quiet week in terms of revenue, at least compared to recent weeks.

It was also quiet concerning new releases, with only 2 new releases in the top 20, and the most popular one only coming in at 9th. That as Snowden.

The other one in 13th place was When the Bough Breaks.

In the Blu-ray and DVD top 20 (at 17th place), but not in the Blu-ray top 20, was In a Valley of Violence.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: None of this week's new releases were available on Ultra HD Blu-ray. But with some Disney titles moving further down the top 10 list, all of the top 7 titles this week had UHD versions. It seems UHD is ending the year on a (relative) high!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Suicide Squad+
    2. The Magnificent Seven+
    3. The Secret Life of Pets+
    4. Storks+
    5. Sully+
    6. Jason Bourne+
    7. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children+
    8. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
    9. Snowden
    10. Finding Dory

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

'Snowden' had the best BD sales share of this week's new releases, with 50.66%. Both 'When the Bough Breaks' and 'In a Valley of Violence' managed 32%.

It's sad that we have to end the year on an "all red" week, but it's not exactly comparing apples to apples, due to the way the two weeks include different holidays (Christmas and New Years).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $11.48m (down 24.7%), while DVD sales decreased by $16.99m (down 22.3%) producing $28.47 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 37.90% to 37.17%.

With the year now done, keep an eye out for our annual "The State of Play" analysis, looking back at the year just ended and how well (or badly) Blu-ray did during this time.

    Stats:

For the week ending December 24th 2016, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 39.22% vs 60.78%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $110.81 million
DVD sales total spending: $171.74 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

The holiday sales period is in full swing, and despite the lack of an A-list release, Blu-ray revenue soared to above $110 million for only the second time this year (and the other time was only four weeks ago).

While none of this week's new releases can be classified as A-list, they were just at the cut off, with Sully being the most popular at the box office (over $120 million worth, but nothing compared to the $360+ million for 'The Secret Life of Pets', for example). It was, however, not the best selling Blu-ray for the week - that accolade belonged to the 2016 version of The Magnificent Seven. In fact, 'Sully' only finished 5th on the Blu-ray chart.

    Closely behind 'Sully' was Storks.

All the way down in 20th place was the next new release, 31.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The top 3 new releases were all available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and 7 out of the top 10 Blu-rays all had 4K versions - the 3 other being Disney releases. Once Disney gets in on the 4K act, and they will in 2017, it's only a matter of time before every title in the top 10, or even in the top 20, will have 4K editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. The Magnificent Seven+
    2. Suicide Squad+
    3. The Secret Life of Pets+
    4. Finding Dory
    5. Sully+
    6. Storks+
    7. Jason Bourne+
    8. Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children+
    9. Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens
    10. Pete's Dragon

None of this week's previously mentioned new releases got above the 50% Blu-ray sales share mark. The title that came closest was ''The Magnificent Seven', with 48.16%, which explains why it topped the Blu-ray sales chart.

'Storks' managed 41% while 'Sully' got 39%.

All three of these top selling new releases had 4K editions, with 'Storks' also having a 3D edition. 'The Magnificent Seven' had the best 4K market share of the three releases, with 6.22%. 'Sully' managed 3.89% while 'Storks' got 1.91%. The 3D market share for 'Storks' was 1.49%, yet again proving that 4K UHD is beating 3D for almost every new release.

An "all green" week, thanks to this week's trio of releases being a lot better than the single release ('War Room') from the same week last year (that same week also included the slow sales Christmas Day holiday, and this year did not). The revenue increases were, however, insignificant.

Blu-ray sales increased by $2.28m (up 2.1%), while DVD sales increased by $2.04m (up 1.2%) producing $3.48 million more in combined revenue.

The holiday sales period is in full swing, and as the summer tent-pole releases gets released on Blu-ray, we have another A-list title debuting on Blu-ray this week to help Blu-ray revenue rise above $90 million for only the second time this year (the other time having occurred only 4 weeks ago).

Suicide Squad easily topped the sales charts this week.

The next new release was Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children in 3rd place. Then it's all the way down to 10th for the next new release, the 2016 version of Ben-Hur.

That was it for new Blu-rays in the top 20, but on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, all the way down in 20th place was Bridget Jones's Baby.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The top 2 new releases were all available on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, and the top 4 Blu-rays all had 4K versions.

'Suicide Squad' debuts on Blu-ray with a BD sales share of 60.17%. 'Ben-Hur' also got over the 50% mark with 50.93%.

'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' didn't quite make the mark, with 46.90%.

Both 'Suicide Squad' and 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children' were available on 3D and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The 3D sales share for 'Suicide Squad' was 2.41%, whereas the UHD BD sales share was 5.45%. The same trend is repeated for 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children', with a 3D sales share of 2.05% versus a 4K sales share of 4.05%. 4K editions have consistently outsold 3D editions!

    Top 10:

Two big A-releases, coupled with the real start of the holiday shopping period, meant that Blu-ray revenue remained at a high mark for the year, and that weekly Blu-ray market share almost topped 40%.

Box office smash The Secret Life of Pets topped the sales charts, with another new release, Jason Bourne, selling about half as many copies in second place.

This was actually pretty much it in terms of new releases in the top 20, with the exception of 2016 World Series Champions: The Chicago Cubs in 20th place.

There are also several Christmas themed older releases coming back to the top 10, including 'Home Alone' and 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas'.

So again, quality beats out quantity, and with the holiday shopping in full swing, the next few week should prove to be as big, if not bigger.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both of the big hitters this week had 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray editions, with varying success.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. The Secret Life of Pets+

'Jason Bourne' had the better BD sales share of the major new releases this week, with 66.47%. To be fair, 'The Secret Life of Pets' wasn't too far behind with 59.22%.

Even '2016 World Series Champions: The Chicago Cubs' got in on the act with an above 50% BD sales share of 52.77%.

As mentioned earlier, both of the big releases this week were available on UHD, with 'The Secret Life of Pets' also available on 3D. 'Jason Bourne' managed a UHD sales share of 6.28%, which is very respectable, but 'The Secret Life of Pets' only managed 2.03%. The 3D sales share of 'The Secret Life of Pets' was similarly disappointing at 1.96%.

Despite this week's good results, they were still not as good as the results from the same week last year when 'Minions' and "Ant-Man' were released. It unfortunately meant that this week was an "all red" week where both Blu-ray and DVD revenue, as well as weekly Blu-ray market share, feel compared to the same week last year.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $19.3m (down 21.1%), while DVD sales decreased by $17.59m (down 14%) producing $36.89 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 42.01% to 39.90%.

    Top 10:

After Black Friday always comes Cyber Monday, and while Blu-ray/DVD sales aren't as spectacular, they are always still at one of the yearly highs during Cyber Monday week.

Blu-ray sales stayed above $60 million, and DVD sales stayed above $100 million, but weekly Blu-ray market share remain largely unchanged.

Unlike last week though, there were new releases. The title that led the other new releases, and also managed to get top spot on the Blu-ray sales chart, was 2016's Pete's Dragon.

The next best new release, in 3rd place, was also another Disney release (and with 'Finding Dory' in second place, it means the top 3 spots all went to Disney this week), The BFG.

Don't Breathe in 5th place was the only other new release in the top 20.

Two new releases that got lost in the madness of last week, were Kubo and the Two Strings and Mechanic: Resurrection in 8th and 9th respectively.

So how did Cyber Monday week 2016 compare to the same week in 2015? Well, it followed the trend set back BF 2016 to the letter, with Blu-ray sales up (very likely thanks to Ultra HD Blu-ray), and DVD sales down slightly. Blu-ray sales were up 5.1%, while DVD sales were down 8.4%.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: As the two major new releases were from Disney, and Disney still refuses to play ball when it comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray, there were no significant new releases on the format ('Don't Breathe' wasn't available on 4K either). 'Mechanic: Resurrection' from last week was available on 4K.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Pete's Dragon
    2. Finding Dory
    3. The BFG

    6. Captain America: Civil War

'Pete's Dragon' debuts on Blu-ray with an impressive first week BD sales share of 60.50%. Just ahead of the 58.82% from 'The BFG'. 'Don't Breathe' managed 35%.

None of these aforementioned new releases were available on 3D or 4K.

It's Black Friday week, so as it's usually the case, there were no new releases. But also usual is the high amount of sales, this time helping Blu-ray to break through the $100 million mark again.

And following the trend for 2016 so far, something I discuss in more detail here, 2016 BF Blu-ray revenue was up against revenue from 2015, I suspect largely on the backs of increasing Ultra HD Blu-ray sales.

Of the top 10 Blu-ray sellers during the BF sales, 7 of them had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions (damn you Disney for not playing ball), and these are all some of the year's biggest hits. I believe this is helping Blu-ray revenue, as this is the first Black Friday in some time that has seen a rise in Blu-ray revenue.

The fact that DVD sales continues to fall, by $18.24 million this year (down 9.5% compared to BF 2015, which was down 15% on BF 2014), suggests that it must be something new on Blu-ray only that's in play, and Ultra HD Blu-ray is the only thing new.

Combined disc sales are down $12.69 million compared to Black Friday 2015.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Finding Dory

No notable new releases this week, but with many of this week's top sellers pulling a UHD sales share of between 2% and 6% (and with UHD pricing being higher), this may go some way to explain the 5.5% rise in Blu-ray revenue.

DVD sales total spending: $65.09 million

    Top 10:

Some big releases (and re-releases) this week allowed Blu-ray revenue to rise above $50 million for the week, and for Blu-ray market share to surge above 40% once again.

This week's top seller was a major new release, Pixar's Finding Dory, which easily outsold everything else this week.

In a very distant second place was Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season.

In fourth place was the Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens - 3D Collector's Edition

There was only one other new release in the rest of the top 20. The Wal-mart exclusive Batman: Assault on Arkham with Suicide Squad Digital HD was in 14th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: As two of the new releases this week were from Disney (and the other was a TV show box set), there was nothing significantly new on UHD Blu-ray this week. But despite this, 6 of the top 10 this week still all had UHD versions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Finding Dory
    2. Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season
    3. Star Trek: Beyond+

    8. Bad Moms
    9. Independence Day: Resurgence+

'Finding Dory' had the best BD sales share of this week's releases, with 69.77%. 'Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season' did very well for a TV box set, with 54.91%, but it was down on the previous season which recorded a first week BD sales share of 59.74%.

None of the mentioned new releases were available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, but the new Collector's Edition for 'The Force Awakens' was available on 3D, with an amazing 73.25% 3D sales share.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 34.16% to 43.89%.

    Stats:

For the week ending November 12th 2016, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 32.74% vs 67.26%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $27.11 million
DVD sales total spending: $55.69 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

Another very quiet week meant that Blu-ray revenue fell back below the $30 million mark. The only new release in the top 10 was Sausage Party. It just managed to outsell last week's number one, 'Star Trek: Beyond'.

Outside of the top 10, Daredevil: The Complete First Season came in at 12th, while Kickboxer: Vengeance placed 17th.

Black Sails: The Complete Third Season didn't get into the Blu-ray top 20, but finished in 17th place on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Sony has made 'Sausage Party' available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, the only of this week's new releases to be made available on the 4K format.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Sausage Party+
    2. Star Trek: Beyond+
    3. Bad Moms
    4. Independence Day: Resurgence+
    5. X-Men: Apocalypse+
    6. *Beauty and the Beast: 25th Anniversary Signature Edition
    7. The Legend of Tarzan+
    8. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call+
    9. Captain America: Civil War
    10. Ice Age: Collision Course+

'Sausage Party' managed a BD sales share of 38.89%, which is fairly average for a new release. Not that the other new releases did much better, with 'Black Sails: The Complete Third Season' getting 35% and 'Kickboxer: Vengeance' getting 34%.

As mentioned earlier, 'Sausage Party' was available on Ultra HD Blu-ray as well, but received a pretty average 3.16%.

Another "all red" week, as 'Sausage Party' this week was no match for 'Terminator: Genisys' (which was also joined by 'Trainwreck', and a new edition of 'Star Wars: Episode IV').

Blu-ray sales decreased by $12.7m (down 31.9%), while DVD sales decreased by $14.54m (down 20.7%) producing $27.24 million less in combined revenue.

For the week ending November 5th 2016, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 37.95% vs 62.05%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $35.18 million
DVD sales total spending: $57.51 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

Blu-ray market share and revenue made a recovery from the lows of last week, thanks largely to Star Trek: Beyond. The new Star Trek film was so popular that it outsold the second placed Bad Moms by more than a 4-to-1 margin, and that even the Star Trek - 3 Movie Collection pack was in the top 10 (at 8th).

Just behind the Star Trek 3 movie pack in 9th place was Outlander: Season Two.

Outside of the top 10 were a couple of other new releases. In 11th was Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders and Nine Lives in 14th.

But it was really the latest Star Trek film that helped Blu-ray revenue rise above $30 million once again, and for Blu-ray weekly market share to get closer to 40% again.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Star Trek: Beyond' was available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, just one of the latest blockbuster releases to be made available on the new 4K format. As you will see in the "Sales Share" section below, it actually did very well on UHD Blu-ray as a percentage of total sales. Five of the top six selling titles this week on Blu-ray all had UHD BD versions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Star Trek: Beyond+
    2. Bad Moms
    3. Independence Day: Resurgence+
    4. The Legend of Tarzan+
    5. X-Men: Apocalypse+
    6. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call+
    7. *Beauty and the Beast: 25th Anniversary Signature Edition
    8. Star Trek - 3 Movie Collection
    9. Outlander: Season Two
    10. Alice Through the Looking Glass

'Star Trek Beyond' not only led the sales charts, it also led the BD sales share chart with 73.50%. 'Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders' wasn't too behind at 67.61%.

'Bad Moms' got 47.38%, while 'Outlander: Season Two' got 33%, with 'Nine Lives' getting 31%.

As mentioned earlier, 'Star Trek: Beyond' was the only title available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, with a BD sales share of 7.60%. It was also the only title to be available on 3D, and once again, the 3D sales share was below that of the UHD version with 6.20%.

Another "all red" week, but again, kind of unavoidable with 'Star Trek: Beyond' up against the massive 'Inside Out' from a year ago.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $15.29m (down 30.3%), while DVD sales decreased by $19.89m (down 25.7%) producing $35.18 million less in combined revenue.

For the week ending October 29th 2016, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 29.88% vs 70.12%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $21.62 million
DVD sales total spending: $50.73 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue fell almost below the $20 million mark this week, and it happened for a very simple reason: there just weren't any major new releases this week.

'Independence Day: Resurgence' was still the week's top seller following its release last week, and it was all the way down to 7th for the first new release, Lights Out.

Then in 9th was the next new release, Nerve.

Outside of the top 10, Skiptrace finished 17th.

That was it in terms of new releases, and as you can see, it was hardly the most exciting line-up.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: None of this week's notable new releases were available on Ultra HD Blu-ray.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Independence Day: Resurgence+
    2. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call+

    6. *Beauty and the Beast: 25th Anniversary Signature Edition

'Nerve' had the best BD sales share of the new releases this week, with 41.508%. 'Lights Out' managed 34.11%, while 'Skiptrace' managed 24%.

None of these new release were available on either 3D or UHD.

While this time last year's 'Pixels' and 'Southpaw' weren't exactly major releases, the then recently released 'Jurassic World' was still selling strong and so this week's new releases had no chance, and produces another "all red" week.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $15.4m (down 41.6%), while DVD sales decreased by $14.81m (down 22.6%) producing $30.21 million less in combined revenue.

For the week ending October 22nd 2016, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 35.67% vs 64.33%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $30.61 million
DVD sales total spending: $55.20 million

    These stats available from here:

    Top 10:

Despite the release of two more big budget movies, Blu-ray and DVD revenue continued their fall from last week. Independence Day: Resurgence and Alice Through the Looking Glass dominated the first and second spots on the sales charts, but failed to inspire the weekly revenue figures.

The fact that these were the only two new releases in the top 20 may have influenced things as well, and even in the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20 chart, there was only the Walmart exclusive 'Independence Day 2-Pack' in 12th place, and the delightfully titled Barbie & Her Sisters in A Puppy Chase in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Of the two major releases, only Fox's 'Independence Day: Resurgence' was available on Ultra HD Blu-ray (Disney has yet to commit to the format, so it wasn't available for 'Alice Through the Looking Glass'). It did relatively well on the format, as you'll see below in the "Sales Share" section.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Independence Day: Resurgence+

Of the two releases this week, it was actually 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' that had the best BD sales share, with 64.72%. 'Independence Day: Resurgence' did well too, with 58.75%.

As mentioned earlier, only the 'Independence Day' sequel was available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, and it was also available on 3D as well. The 3D edition managed a 3D sales share of 3.89%, while the UHD edition got 4.92%. The original movie had also been made available on UHD some time ago, and it topped the UHD sales share chart with 8.39%.

This was always going to be a big drop, as this week's new releases had to go up against 'Jurassic World' from the same week last year, one of the biggest movies of all time and one of the top selling Blu-rays from 2015. So another "all red" week, but reasonable given the circumstances.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $33.7m (down 52.4%), while DVD sales decreased by $13.03m (down 19.1%) producing $46.73 million less in combined revenue.

    Top 10:

Despite a raft of new releases, Blu-ray and DVD revenue remained largely unchanged from the previous week.

It really has to be considered a flop, as the new Ghostbusters reboot, Ghostbusters: Answer the Call failed to light up the Blu-ray sales charts either. It was the top selling title, and it did beat second placed new release The Legend of Tarzan quite handily, but as you can see from the revenue figures above, it was pretty average all around.

The same could be said of Ice Age: Collision Course - the 5th (and hopefully final) Ice Age movie failed to do anything significant at the box office, and it failed to warm up Blu-ray sales either for the week by coming in at 4th.

There were 3 more new releases outside of the Blu-ray top 10, Blood Father at 12th, The Infiltrator at 14th and Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party at 15th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The top 4 Blu-ray sellers this week were all available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, including this week's three top selling new releases. In fact, 7 of the top 10 titles all had UHD versions. It seems studios are really investing in UHD, which despite the need for a new player and TV combo, will be a much more accessible format than 3D (as many titles can't benefit from 3D, plus it's not something everyone can watch).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Ghostbusters: Answer the Call+
    2. The Legend of Tarzan+
    3. X-Men: Apocalypse+

    6. Captain America: Civil War
    7. Warcraft+

None of this week's new releases managed to get above a 50% BD sales share. 'Ghostbusters: Answer the Call' came the closest, with 49.51%.

'The Infiltrator' was close behind with 48.19%. 'The Legend of Tarzan' managed 46.36%, with 'Ice Age: Collision Course' getting 43.42%.

'Blood Father' got 27%, while 'Hillary's America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party' managed 18%.

The 3 best selling new releases were available on both 3D and UHD. 'Ghostbusters: Answer the Call', for which the 3D version was a Best Buy exclusive, managed a 3D sales share of 5.08%. 'The Legend of Tarzan' managed a 3D sales share of 3.09% while 'Ice Age: Collision Course' got 2.62%.

For UHD, 'Ghostbusters: Answer the Call' got 5.08%, 'The Legend of Tarzan' got 4.17%, and 'Ice Age: Collision Course' got 1.83%.

After coming close recently, we finally have another "all red" week, since this week's new releases could up match up to this time last year's line-up of 'Aladdin', 'San Andreas' and 'Tomorrowland'.

Blu-ray sales increased by $8.51m (down 19.8%), while DVD sales decreased by $6.13m (down 9.6%) producing $14.64 million less in combined revenue.

An A-list release this week in the form of X-Men: Apocalypse helped Blu-ray revenue rise compared to last week, although weekly Blu-ray market share remained largely unchanged.

'X-Men: Apocalypse' easily outsold all other titles this week, including last week's new release, Warcraft.

The next new release was in 4th place, The Purge: Election Year.

Going down the list, to 8th place, was the next new release, Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV.

Going outside of the top 10, there was Vikings: Season 4 Vol. 1 in 14th and Attack on Titan - The Movie: Part 1 in 16th.

American Horror Story: Hotel came in at 13th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, but failed to sell enough copies on Blu-ray to make it into the Blu-ray top 20.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

Of the notable new releases this week, 'Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV' had the best BD sales share, with 69.30%. The week's actual top seller, 'X-Men: Apocalypse', wasn't too far behind (and was second place on the BD sales share chart) with 66.97%.

'Attack on Titan — The Movie: Part 1' got 60.46%, while 'The Purge: Election Year' also got above 50% with 50.61%.

'Vikings: Season 4 Vol. 1' managed 33%, while 'American Horror Story: Hotel' got 24%.

Out of these new releases, only one title was available on Blu-ray 3D and/or Ultra HD. 'X-Men: Apocalypse' had a 3D sales share of 4.38%, and a UHD sales share of 5.84%. A recent trend has emerged where packages with UHD has outsold packages with 3D, impressive considering how new 4K is - this seem to suggest 4K will have more legs than 3D.

DVD sales total spending: $50.61 million

    Top 10:

Warcraft did not do particularly well at the domestic US box office, but it was a huge hit overseas. And on Blu-ray, it was also the week's top selling title, although it did not sell enough copies to rank with other A-list releases.

The next new release was Central Intelligence in third place, and there were three other new releases in the top 20.

In 6th and 7th was The Shallows and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

All the way down in 18th place was Cell.

Outside of the top 20, but still in the combined Blu-ray and DVD charts were Welcome to Monster High: The Origin Story and Grimm: Season Five.

So a few releases, but without a real A-list release like 'Captain America: Civil War' or a Blu-ray exclusive like last week's 'Beauty and the Beast: 25th Anniversary Signature Edition', Blu-ray revenue and market share both fell compared to recent weeks.

It's also worth noting that all four of the new releases in the Blu-ray top 10 were also available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, suggesting that (at least some) studios are putting in the effort to release titles on the new 4K format, including Sony Pictures. I mention Sony because of their recent decision not to include Ultra HD Blu-ray playback on their updated PS4 Pro - something that's already available on the $100 cheaper Xbox One S console!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Warcraft+
    2. *Beauty and the Beast: 25th Anniversary Signature Edition
    3. Central Intelligence+

'Warcraft' also led the BD sales share chart, with a very respectable 71.69%. The next best title was 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates', but it only had 41%, just ahead of the 40.11% earned by 'The Shallows'. 'Central Intelligence' got 37.35%.

For the other new releases, 'Grimm: Season Five' got 23%, 'Cell' got 22% and 'Welcome to Monster High: The Origin Story' managed only 11%.

As mentioned earlier, a lot of the new releases this week were available on multiple formats, including 4K and 3D. In fact, more were available on 4K than on 3D. 'Warcraft' was available on both formats, with the 3D edition getting a 3D sales share of 3.10%, and the UHD version getting 6.19%.

'The Shallows' was only on UHD, and it managed 3.33%. Similarly, 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates' also had a UHD version and it got 2.71%. 'Central Intelligence' got 1.73% on UHD, and again, it was not available on 3D.

It's definitely clear that it's much easier for studios to release titles on UHD than on 3D, mainly because most films just aren't suitable for 3D, while many films are already natively available in 4K.

This week's results just managed to avoid the dreaded "all red" status, with this week's Blu-ray market share just a little bit higher than the same week a year ago. You may wonder why last year's results were so good compared to this week's - that's because it was the week that 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' was released, one of the biggest releases of 2015.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $11.39m (down 25.8%), while DVD sales decreased by $21.08m (down 29.4%) producing $32.46 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 38.12% to 39.30%.

    Stats:

For the week ending September 24th 2016, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.90% vs 57.10%

DVD sales total spending: $50.51 million

    Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD revenue both fell compared to last week's high, but weekly Blu-ray market share still remained above 40% for the week thanks to the release of the Blu-ray exclusive, 25th Anniversary Edition of Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

It wasn't the only big release of the week, with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows not too behind in second place.

Skipping 'Captain America: Civil War' in third place, the next two places were also occupied by new releases, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising in 4th and Free State of Jones in 5th.

Then it's all the way down to 9th for the next new release (and the last new release in the top 20), the 30th anniversary edition of Labyrinth, which wasn't a Blu-ray exclusive.

So some good releases, but nothing on the scale of 'Civil War', but two releases in the top 10 that were both re-releases (and good for Blu-ray typically, if not exclusive to the format) meant that Blu-ray market share remained high, and revenue wasn't too bad either.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. *Beauty and the Beast: 25th Anniversary Signature Edition
    2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows+
    3. Captain America: Civil War
    4. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising
    5. Free State of Jones
    6. The Jungle Book
    7. The Conjuring 2
    8. Now You See Me 2
    9. Labyrinth: 30th Anniversary Edition+
    10. The Huntsman: Winter's War

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows' had the best BD sales share of this week's new releases (not including 'Beauty and the Beast', which was exclusively available on Blu-ray), with 67.8%. As expected with a re-release, 'Labyrinth' also did well to get 66.22%.

'Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising' also managed to get over the 50% mark with 51.04%. 'Free State of Jones' got 44.75%.

Both ' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows' and 'Labyrinth: 30th Anniversary Edition' were available on Ultra HD Blu-ray as well, with the former also available on 3D. 'Labyrinth' did very well on UHD, with a UHD sales share of 13.65%. TMNT managed a UHD sales share of 7.38%, which was still impressive compared to the 1 or 2% results from earlier in the year, and also compared to the title's 2.39% Blu-ray 3D sales share.
