    Blu-ray vs DVD: 46.88% vs 53.12%

DVD sales total spending: $28.73 million

    These stats available from here:

    Top 10:

A quieter week this week in which you had to go to the 7th place to find the best selling new releases, which was Batman Beyond: The Complete Series, a Blu-ray exclusive release.

A 4K exclusive release was also in the top 10 in the form of the 80th-anniversary edition of The Wizard of Oz, in 9th place.

Yet another Blu-ray exclusive was in 13th place, Godzilla: The Showa-Era Films, 1954-1975.

And finally in 17th place we have 10 Minutes Gone.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only the 4K exclusive release of 'The Wizard of Oz' was available on UHD. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. The Lion King+
    2. Toy Story 4+
    3. Spider-Man: Far From Home+
    4. Aladdin (2019)+
    5. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum+
    6. *Batman Beyond: The Complete Series
    7. Hocus Pocus
    8. 3 From Hell+
    9. *The Wizard of Oz: 80th Anniversary Edition+
    10. *Wonder Woman: Bloodlines+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

Almost all of the new releases this week were Blu-ray/4K exclusives, all except for '10 Minutes Gone' which managed to get a BD sales share of 42.20%.

Rising weekly Blu-ray market share helped to prevent this week being an "all red" week, in which every metric for this week was worse off than the metrics for the same week last year. The releases last year weren't that much bigger to be honest ('Batman: The Complete Animated Series - Deluxe Limited Edition', 'The Spy Who Dumped Me' and 'Teen Titans Go! to the Movies' in the top 10), but Blu-ray sales were still down 12.1%.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $2.39m (down 8.6%), with unit sales down 12.1%.

DVD sales decreased by $5.47m (down 16.0%), with unit sales down 20.8%.

This meant $7.86m less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 44.79% to 46.88%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray weekly revenue rose above $30 million again (and with market share above 50%) thanks to the release of Disney's live-action The Lion King. It easily outsold everything else this week, including the recent favourite, and Disney alum, 'Toy Story 4'.

The only other new releases in the top 10 was the 4K/Blu-ray only release Wonder Woman: Bloodlines in 3rd.

Outside of the top 10, we have Dauntless: The Battle of Midway in 17th and the 4K exclusive release 007: The Daniel Craig Collection in 18th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both 'The Lion King' and 'Wonder Woman: Bloodlines' were available on UHD. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

'Dauntless: Battle of Midway' got 32%, while the other two were all Blu-ray exclusives.

For UHD sales share, 'Wonder Woman: Bloodlines' beat 'The Lion King' with 13.83% versus 9.05%.

A quieter week following the last, where the top-selling new release was 3 From Hell, which only managed to get a second-place finish.

Crawl, in 4th, was the next best new release, followed by Stuber in 8th.

Scarface comes onto 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray for the first time as a 4K and Blu-ray only Gold edition, and it earned the classic a 12th place finish. Also outside of the top 10 was Teen Titans Go! vs. Teen Titans in 14th, the last of the new releases in the top 20 this week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Out of this week's new releases, '3 From Hell', 'Stuber' and the new Gold edition of 'Scarface' was available on UHD. 7 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

'Stuber' just missed out on crossing the 50% mark with 49.27%.

For the UHD releases, 'Scarface' completely dominated with a 95.92% UHD sales share (makes you wonder why they even bothered with the standard Blu-ray edition). '3 From Hell' did well with 11.57%, and 'Stuber' got 5.19%.

    Top 10:

Another big A-list release this week helped Blu-ray revenue stay close to $40 million this week, and for Blu-ray sales to easily beat DVD sales.

Toy Story 4 debuts into the top 10 strongly, outselling last week's number one 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' by more than a 4-to-1 margin.

Annabelle Comes Home, in 3rd place, was also a new release. As was Midsommar in 7th.

Outside of the top 10, Dragon Ball Super: Part 9 was 11th, while Deadwood: The Movie was 14th.

And it's always nice to see some Halloween classics back in the top 10, with The Nightmare Before Christmas joining 'Hocus Pocus' in the top 10.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Out of this week's new releases, only 'Toy Story 4' was available on UHD. 6 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

'Dragon Ball Super: Part 9' also did well with 75.17%, just ahead of 'Midsommar' with 73.43%.

'Annabelle Comes Home' had to settle for 47.82%, while 'Deadwood: The Movie' got 42.80%.

    Top 10:

A big A-list release has helped Blu-ray sales leapfrog DVD sales for the week ending October 5, 2019.

That release was Spider-Man: Far From Home, which easily outsold everything else for the week.

In fact, the only title to get anywhere near this release was the Spider-Man: Homecoming & Far From Home 2-movie pack, in 8th place.

Otherwise, the top 20 was dominated by Halloween movies and a trio of first time on 4K releases, Guardians of the Galaxy (13th), Doctor Strange (14th) and The Shining (16th).

All of this helped Blu-ray market share to reach above 52% for the week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Spider-Man: Far From Home' was available on UHD. 6 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD sales dropped slightly compared to the previous week, despite the release of Yesterday on 4K, Blu-ray and DVD.

The Beatles inspired movie only managed to get a 4th place finish though, failing to beat last week's top 3 sellers, 'Aladdin (2019)', 'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' and 'X-Men: Dark Phoenix'.

In fact, 'Yesterday' only barely beat Anna in 5th place.

Child’s Play was the next new release at 7th, while Shaft was in 8th.

The signature collection editions of Sleeping Beauty and 101 Dalmatians got 9th and 10th place finishs respectively.

Rounding off the top 20, A Score to Settle finished in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The signature collections didn't get a 4K edition, surprisingly, but 'Yesterday', 'Shaft' (Best Buy exclusive) and 'Anna' all had UHD editions. 7 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

'Shaft' got 48.16% while 'A Score to Settle' had to settle for 28.57%.

For the 4K releases, it was actually 'Anna' that had the best UHD sales share, with 12.62%. 'Yesterday' got 7.83% and 'Shaft', being a Best Buy exclusive, only got 3.45%.

    Top 10:

A big hit, a big re-release, and a new chapter in a cult favourite series all helped this week to bring Blu-ray revenue close to $40 million, and for Blu-ray market share to go above 50%.

The 2019 remake of Aladdin topped the Blu-ray sales chart for the week, but it was only a narrow victory over a surprise hit (hitman?) John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum.

The re-release of the original animated Aladdin, on 4K for the first time, also did well and got a third-place finish (this was also a Blu-ray only release, as a DVD only release was skipped for this "Signature" edition).

It was these three titles that helped Blu-ray sales soar this week, and for unit sales to rise 76% compared to the same week last year.

There were two more new releases outside of the top 10. The Dead Don’t Die got as high as 14th, while the 4K re-release of Casino was close behind in 15th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only "The Dead Don't Die" wasn't made available on UHD out of the previously mentioned new releases. Every single title in this week's top 10 had a UHD edition!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Aladdin (2019)+
    2. John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum+
    3. *Aladdin+
    4. Men in Black: International+
    5. Avengers: Endgame+
    6. Godzilla: King of the Monsters+
    7. The Secret Life of Pets 2+
    8. Rocketman+
    9. It: Chapter One+
    10. Pokémon Detective Pikachu+

The live-action version of 'Aladdin' had the best BD sales share out of the new releases, with 78.84%.

'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' got 71.52%, while "The Dead Don’t Die" had to settle for 35.42%.

The others were all Blu-ray only releases.

For UHD sales share performances, it was the animated version of 'Aladdin' that had the best UHD sales share, 27.96%. 'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum' got 19.69%, while live-action 'Aladdin' managed 10.69%.

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 44.71% vs 55.29%

DVD sales total spending: $30.16 million

    Top 10:

Despite the release of Men in Black: International, Blu-ray revenue fell compared to the previous week.

The latest MIB movie was one of four new releases in the top 20, with the next best selling new release being Ma in 7th.

Booksmart ranked 9th, while My Hero Academia: Season Three Part Two finished in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only 'Men in Black: International' was made available on UHD this week. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

'Men in Black: International' did amazingly with regards to its Blu-ray sales share, 93.00%! A possible reason for this could be the relative lack of a premium the Blu-ray version has compared to the DVD edition (only $2 more on Amazon and the Blu-ray combo version includes the DVD version anyway).

'Booksmart' did well with 58.77%, while 'Ma' just failed to get over 50% with 48.44%.

For UHD sales share performances, 'Men in Black: International' did well too, with 16.16% - it's nowhere near as high as the Blu-ray sales share, but then the 4K edition had more of a price premium ($4 more than the Blu-ray version).

    Top 10:

Three medium-to-large releases this week helped Blu-ray weekly revenue to rise above $30 million.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters was the top seller, not just among new releases, but out of all titles (and yes, even beating 'Avengers: Endgame' - big titles such as this don't seem to have the same kind of staying power as they did in the past, like when 'The Force Awakens' was on top of the Blu-ray chart for weeks on end). It easily beat second placed The Secret Life of Pets 2 despite the latter being a bigger domestic box office draw.

The latter was also available in a 2-movie pack, which came 17th on the Blu-ray sales chart for the week.

Rocketman in 4th place completed the trio of movies mentioned previously.

And available in 4K for the first time with a stunning new transfer is Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, rising as high as 6th.

And finally, in 19th, was The Banana Splits Movie.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-release of Apocalypse Now, all but 'The Banana Splits Movie' was made available on UHD. Every single title in this week's top 10 had a UHD edition!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

Out of the new releases (and remembering that 'Apocalypse Now' counts as a Blu-ray only re-release, and a 4K one at that, so its Blu-ray and UHD sales sale will be nominally at 100% and not included in the Blu-ray market share chart linked below), 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' had the best BD sales share with 66.75%.

It was just ahead of 'Rocketman' with 64.46%, which itself was ahead of 'The Secret Life of Pets 2' at 58.28%.

Even 'The Banana Splits Movie' managed a sales share of over 50%, just, at 50.90%.

'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' was also released as a Blu-ray 3D, but with only 1.17% of disc sales for this movie being the 3D edition, it begs the question "why bother?" (the answer, of course, is "because some people still watch 3D movies at home).

For UHD sales share performances, 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' did well with 18.05%, 'Rocketman' managed 13.47%, while 'The Secret Life of Pets 2' got 6.14%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue fell back down to earth after last week's surge, as this week's top selling new release, Brightburn, was not a match for 'Avengers: Endgame' (but who is?).

'Brightburn', for all its efforts, only managed to finish in 3rd place (and selling 9 times fewer copies than 'Endgame'), just ahead of another new release, A Dog’s Journey.

The next new release, The Hustle, was in 6th place, while The Walking Dead: The Complete Ninth Season was in 10th.

Lego DC: Batman - Family Matters rounded off the new releases in the top 20 by finishing in 19th.

So hardly a stellar line-up of new releases, and Blu-ray weekly revenue dropped by more than $30 million compared to the previous week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only 'Brighburn' had a UHD edition for sale. 7 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

'Brightburn' had a good BD sales share percentage as well, with 74.73% of all disc sales being the Blu-ray/4K editions.

The other releases didn't do as well, with 'Lego DC: Batman - Family Matters' coming closest at 52.59%, 'The Hustle' with 46.68% and 'A Dog's Journey' at 42.34%.

'The Walking Dead: The Complete Ninth Season' managed 41.89%, which was up from 39.36% for the eighth season (but down from 42.35% for the 7th season).

For UHD sales share performances, 'Brightburn' managed an impressive 21.59%, only failing to beat 'Endgame' (22.75%) in the UHD sales share chart.

An "all red" week in which every metric below was worse off than the same week a year ago. Somewhat understandable though given that 'Deadpool 2' was released this time last year, and top-selling new release 'Brightburn' was no match.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $18.38m (down 41.2%), with unit sales down 35.5%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales more than doubled compared to the previous week thanks to the release of mega-blockbuster Avengers: Endgame on Blu-ray and other disc formats (check out some bonus features from the Blu-ray release, including Bloopers & Outtakes, Deleted Scenes and this Featurette).

It was so dominant, that it outsold last week's number one, 'Pokémon Detective Pikachu', by more than an 18-to-1 ratio on Blu-ray.

Disney also chose to re-release some of the earlier Marvel Cinematic Universe movies on 4K for the first time, including Iron Man in 7th, Thor in 12th, Iron Man 2 in 13th, Iron Man 3 in 14th, and Thor: The Dark World in 15th.

Those looking to grab all of the Avengers movies in a collector's edition boxset managed to do so in great enough numbers to get the set to rank 17th.

An interesting note regarding the 'Endgame' Blu-ray release - a DVD version has not been included in the combo, meaning those that need the standard definition version will have to buy the DVD-only edition (which, for now, Disney hasn't yet stopped production of). This could be a sign of things to come though as studios start to realise that Blu-ray/DVD combos are no longer that attractive to consumers who really only need the Blu-ray and Digital versions. Another nail in the DVD coffin.

Another interesting take from all of this is that given how huge 'Endgame' was at the box office, I mean it is literally the biggest movie ever, whether that translated to a record-breaking Blu-ray sales a result. It did not. Take another big release, 'Star Wars: A Force Awakens'. While this first of the new Star Wars trilogy movie was easily beaten by 'Endgame' at the box office, the Blu-ray for the Star Wars movie was originally released in April 2016 when Blu-ray was still near its peak. For that week, Blu-ray sales grew to more than $90 million, much higher than this week's $57 million or so. The take from this? Revenue from disc sales isn't what it used to be, with many of the same sales going to digital, while other consumers are willing to wait a bit longer for the eventual streaming release (this time on Disney's own platform, Disney+). There's also the situation with decreasing prices, and hence decreasing profits, for discs in general.

With such a big release happening, it made sense for other notable releases to avoid having to compete, and so it was all the way down to the 11th place for the next new release, Shadow.

Unplanned got a 16th place finish to round off the new releases in the top 20.

Blu-ray market share almost reached 63% this week off the back of 'Endgame' and the Marvel 4K re-releases.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the Marvel 4K re-releases, 'Avengers: Endgame' and 'Shadow' were both made available on UHD. 9 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

    5. *Batman: Hush+

    8. Avengers: Infinity War+

Since no new DVD editions of the earlier Marvel movies that received 4K editions were released at the same time, I will be counting these as "Blu-ray exclusives" for sales share purposes. So apart from these releases, 'Avengers: Endgame' actually had the best BD sales share of 79.83%.

'Shadow' did well on Blu-ray too, with a BD sales share of 71.41%.

'Unplanned' managed only 20%, but perhaps that's reasonable considering its targeted audience.

For UHD sales share performances, 'Avengers: Endgame' managed 24.60%, with 'Shadow' not too far behind with '19.26%'.

If the results this week didn't seem that out of the ordinary compared to results from the same week last year, it's because that week also featured a big release - another Avenger movie in the form of 'Avengers: Infinity War'.

Blu-ray sales increased by $3.14m (up 5.8%), with unit sales up 1.2%.

Blu-ray sales rose slightly this week thanks to the release of Pokémon Detective Pikachu. It easily outsold everything else during the week, including (distant) second place new release, and Blu-ray exclusive, Batman: Hush.

The next new release was The Curse of La Llorona in 7th place.

Out of the top 20, the crowdfunded and Blu-ray exclusive What We Left Behind: Looking Back at 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' finished in 13th, while Poms finished in 18th.

Looking at UHD sales share performances, 'Batman: Hush' beat 'Pokémon Detective Pikachu' with 14.26% vs 13.25%, both good results.

And let's not forget that 'Pokémon Detective Pikachu' had a 3D Blu-ray edition, which got a 3D sales share of just 1.00%. Yeah, I know, why do they still bother (although 3D fans will disagree - I guess it's kind of nice that some studios are continuing to serve an increasingly niche clientele).

Blu-ray sales took a slight tumble mainly due to the calibre of releases for the week ending August 3.

    Top 10:

A who's who of movies that failed to light up the box office are this week's new releases, starting with Alita: Battle Angel in top spot.

This particular release is also interesting as it was available in a 3-disc release that features not only the standard Blu-ray but also the 4K *and* 3D version of the film (a standard Blu-ray combo that includes the DVD version of the film was also available, but the usual 4K + Blu-ray + Digital version was not released in lieu of the 4K + 3D + Blu-ray + Digital version).

In a distant second place was another one of 2019's misses, the remake of Hellboy (this one was more of your traditional release, with the Blu-ray+DVD combo, 4K+Blu-ray combo and DVD only editions).

Box office disappointment Missing Link came 6th.

We had a few more new releases outside of the top 10. Master Z: Ip Man Legacy arrived in 13th place, while Critters Attack! finished in 15th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both 'Alita: Battle Angel' and 'Hellboy' were made available on UHD. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Alita: Battle Angel+
    2. Hellboy+
    3. Shazam!+
    4. Breakthrough+
    5. Captain Marvel+
    6. Missing Link
    7. Dumbo+
    8. The Lion King
    9. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World+
    10. Pet Sematary+

'Alita: Battle Angel' totally bossed on the BD sales share chart with a BD sales share of 82.12%. The unique way this film was released on 4K and 3D meant that it was slightly tricky to calculate 3D sales share and 4K sales share, but 4K UHD sales share for the title was at a high 30.21% (and since the 3D version was included with every 4K edition, the 3D sales share can be considered the same).

'Hellboy' managed a BD sales share of 68.34% with a 4K UHD sales share of 16.67%.

The rest only had BD releases, and so 'Master Z: Ip Man Legacy' got 57.40%, 'Missing Link' got 56.00%, and 'Critters Attack!' just failed to get above 50% with 49.45%.

    Year on Year Comparison

The stats for the week ending July 28, 2018 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) have been made and are shown below.

Rising weekly Blu-ray market share helped to prevent another "all red" week, where all metrics this week is down compared to the same week last year. This is perhaps understandable given that 'Ready Player One' was the big release from this time last year.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $2.74m (down 9.4%), with unit sales down 4.6%.

DVD sales decreased by $5.75m (down 17.2%), with unit sales down 18.7%.

This meant $8.49 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 46.55% to 48.79%.
