Well I started out as a certified mechanic and moved on to applying those skills to a technical advisory position for the largest fleet leasing company in the world. I advise companies on vehicle repairs, negotiate, and purchase repairs on their behalf. Like Lt. I also like the technical aspect of automobiles and enjoy debating repair recomendations and solutions with the shops that call in with repair requests. I also love the low tech side of things, ie I love all things Volkswagen (air cooled) I have a 1956 VW Bug, I love how it has "a vacuum line" and a total of 7 wires under the hood for the harness, and a carburator so basic that even the choke is run by a cable, yet still gets 32mpg. I enjoy fishing all the year round, snowmobiling, camping, Love cooking, (i make a fabulous cheese cake) and one day aspire to build a pc that is lightining fast.Comment

@blutach - Tools , yeah I luv 'em! I can't keep my hands off 'em to this day. The Corner thing though ya figured it out.
@vw - those were the days, simple under the hood, remember opening the hood and ya could see the ground around those 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines, Now sheesh ya need a GPS system to find your way around the schematic for the electronics gizmos that control everything. The shade tree mechanic days are gone, no electricity for all the diagnostice equipment needed today.
When you mentioned the vacuum line I thought of the old vacuum operated windshield wipers that usta stop momentarily when ya put the pedal to the medalNot registered Go here and click register to join the Digital Digest Forums

Well, could be herbie's Great Grand Father.
Ahhh, yes the things they used to use vacuum for. Not only windshield wipers, but some of the first power door locks and remote trunk releases were vacuum operated. I remember a friends 1964 Oldsmobile, with power locks and trunk, it had a vacuum tank about the size of a 2 gallon can under the hood. It stored enough vacuum for several operations of the trunk and locks.Last edited by vw56german; 3 May 2006, 11:14 PM.Comment

Well I guess you could say I have a Masters in “Life in the Real World” from the school of hard knocks! LOL
Really after high school I followed in my mothers and step mother tracks;
I was waiting tables to get by while going to cosmogony school.
But back in Middle and high school I always had a love for wood working and Metal fabrication. I took NO home economics classes and focused on Shop classes both wood and metals.
So as time went one I became a Bar manager and a salon manager and banked enough money to Start my own business in Metal working.
I owned Image Metal for 7 years, “when Image is everything” LOL
Image Metal was a custom job shop mainly custom antiques. Anything Metal including car and motorcycle parts. Most of my clients were high end and very prestigious antique dealers most of them from Chicago. I restored a lot of very old very large chandeliers that sold for over a million US dollars to millionaires from all over the world.
When my son came and the hours got to be too much I sold my business and I took a cushy Union Job as a Class A polisher/grinder by trade. Where I was to be set for life with great pay and great benefits. Then one night I had a life threatening horrific industrial accident that would change my life forever. That is where I began living on a computer. LOL!
After my Industrial accident I got out of the manual/skilled labor part of manufacturing. And I got into the administrative/creative end of manufacturing.
Due to corporate downsizing I am now unemployed and wondering what it is that I want to do when I grow up. LOL
For many years have been a freelance photographer mainly weddings on the side.
I am now looking to more into the world of graphic arts as I have also been an artist my whole life just not for a living.Last edited by photo_angel2004; 3 May 2006, 11:24 PM.Comment

vw56german, I too had lots of beetles and then I got a 1973 MG Midget, which has the same simplicity. Using my knowledge I made mine reliable, blueprinting the motor with forged pistons, 10 degree cam and DCOE40 Webers and heads and w whole lot of other stuff.
Photo Angel: There seems to be a lot of people with injuries here. I just had a Pulse Generator put in me that is connected to the base of my skull for managing pain, (Occipital Implant) I think people really find release or escape in movies. I really enjoy Anime' for that reason. I worked with many women who were machinists, it made shop life tolerable.Last edited by toomanycats; 10 May 2006, 11:14 AM.Comment

Still battle chronic pain in my Jaw, neck and back though and Yes a good movie does tend to take the mind off of the pain.Comment

I have worked in the auto industry for the last 20 years. I'm married for many years now and have a lovely wife and two active boys. Some of my interests include fishing, hunting (don't get out much anymore), mountain biking, photography, music, and movies. I also like to spend time working around my yard with my wife. Being on or in the lake is one of my favourite ways to relax."Wanted in 14 counties of this state. Ooooo, i must admit I like the MG Midgets, growing up a neighbor had an MGC with the six cylinder. Never saw him open it up, but it was rumored to be very fast. I worked on a 1969 MG Midget when I was in tech school. It ran terrible, and I was picked to solve its troubles. When I was done it would bark the tires on a hard shift into 3rd. The car was a very nice restoration donated from an estate, it had both the full convertable top and the little cover that fastened at the top of the doors and dash. The school sold it for funds after it was running good and the body shop cleaned up some minor scuffs from sitting. They got $1550 USD for it back in 1984, what a crime no student could buy it.Comment
