    Different drives have different pattern for jumpers. Check to put it in the right position. In the beginning of this thread you said that you was able to do at least a burn and then drive didn't work.

          I had this same problem about 6 months ago. I have found that when you remove a DVD/CD drive it is best to start the computer without any drive the ide slot before you replace the drive. Then shut down and install the new drive. This has worked for the 2 computers I have built in the last 6 months. I replaced the drives (swapped them around) till I got the combo I liked.

              That should 'not' be necessary.

                  I personally never had any issues like that, but you and Toomanycats probably have a point in that it never hurts to be 'overly' cautious.

                    with W98 it was 3 reboots and clean up ghost devices from safe mode
