Is the length of time posts display as new posts a user changeable setting? Often new posts show as already read by the time I make it thru the whole forum. I notice that on Doom9 and NotebookForum unread posts tend to remain labeled so for several days.

Good question - it seems to go after about 15-20 minutes of inactivity after being logged on so if you do a New Posts Since Last Visit again, the unread ones have vanished.
I hope admin reads this and can fix it.

I have found that if you leave the screen open, it will display the unreads in bold, but if you go to page 2 for example, they all appear to be "read".
PMO, too

There's a new feature introduced in 3.6.x that deals with this. There are several options:
1. The thread will be automatically marked "read" after a period of inaction (currently set at 900 seconds) and your session expires (eg. if you close the browser). This is the default and current setting, and the 900 seconds can be extended to be more accomondating.
2. Database based, no automatic marking (threads will never be marked as "read" unless you physically read them). This is more space and processor intensive. A bug is that if you read all the threads in the forum, the forum itself is not marked read until you actually view the list of threads in the forum
3. Database, automatic forum marking. Same as above, except when all threads in a forum is read, it will automatically mark the entire forum as read (no need to view the list of threads to "force" the software to recognise it has been read). This is the most processor intensive option.
A limit can be set (default 10 days) for the database options where all unread threads/forums will be marked read (in other words, the information stored in the database about which threads you have read will be deleted after 10 days).
Doom9 is obviously using option 2 or 3, possibly with a shorter limit (eg. 3 days). Option 3 is the most "user friendly", and if the limit is set to 1-3 days, it will allow plenty of time for people to ensure they have read a thread (and if they haven't read it in a day or two, then they probably didn't want to read it in the first place).
So which one will it be?Last edited by admin; 30 Dec 2006, 02:11 PM.Comment

I set up a tab with this as an address.
In Firefox; I set up a tab with this address:
PHP Code:http://forum.digital-digest.com/search.php?do=getdaily
I am able to go through them in about an hour.
You can also get the new posts by the New Posts tab on the top of this forum page.
I know it is frustrating when the posts are marked read but I have come to learn to live with it. Maybe 900 seconds is too short. Would 1800 work??Gary D

I like option 3 with the 3 day limit admin. Seems this will get rid of all frustrations.
@Gary_D - that is my login, too, except I use do=getnew. I only wanna see new threads. Trouble with the timeout is if you get on the phone for a bit, you're stuffed.

I've changed it to option 3 with 3 days limit. Changing the session limit might introduce other problems to do with login and the display of "who's online", so better to leave it unless the database method is taking too many CPU cycles.Comment

How important is it for everyone to know who is online? Can this be shut off? If this a drain on the CPU, maybe a poll will tell whether this feature is essential to the members here.Gary D

I personally like it the way it was, this way is making me nuts I always go back to my user cp to see if there are any replies to threads i have replied to and now there is this never ending list of OMG LOL
I actually have to search through them now to see if there are any replies and I give up at this point. User Cp no longer much use to me its fater to click the posts in past 24 hours.
I really am not trying to complain but i dont like this new setting at all. When you reply to a lot of threads it gets insane and now its showing threads from yesterday that no further replies have been made yet they dont disappear from my user cp.

It seems that it has reset itself to the last three days. When I just logged in there are 209 unread posts over that period, which is clearly wrong. EDIT: Similarly, after posting this and doing a new search for new posts, this post does not show up (the thread should be at the top, shouldn't it?).
@admin - is this a glitch or a one-time issue which will work it's way through after you mark all posts read?
As for who's online, yes, the mods at least tend to look at this a bit.
