I think once you have read/posted it doesn't show up. In the past, your posts showed up as not bold on the top of the list. Guess you can't have it both ways
Yeah, but the 15 minute timeout was a bummer. If admin can add your post (as a read post) to the list (while your browser session is open or until you hit markread) then it should be pretty good.
I didnt mind the 15 minute time out LOL anything after that you could alway click on subscribed threads and pull up everything you had subscribed to.
Now I get everything I subscribed to weather i want it there or not my user Cp is INSANE now dont like it.
Anyone that makes a lot of posts is going to have an insane list the people that seem to like it are the people that post 40 posts per year. LOL thats why they like it.
1. You hit the new posts link and it displays any new posts since your last forum visit (it actually does a search, and the search results are displayed). If you've visited the forum for more than 15 minutes, then it will display any new posts in the last 15 minutes only because the session expired. If you close your browser (all browser windows, not just the one for the forum) - this expires the session as well and all unread posts are marked as read.
2. You read some of the unread posts. If you refresh the search results page, then read posts will be marked without the bold. The same happens if you click on a thread link, read the thread, and then use "back" to get back to the list of new posts. New posts since you made the search will now show up.
3. If you click on the "new posts" link again, then it will display the same results (again read posts will not be bold) plus any new posts that have been made since step 1 until the search result expires (you get an "invalid search" error) or your session expires (about 15 minutes). When the search results expires, all posts before your current login will be marked as read. When your session expires, all posts before the expiration will be marked as read.
------------------
The new method:
1. You hit the new posts link and it displays all threads you haven't read in the last 3 days. Any threads older than 3 days will be automatically marked as read. It doesn't matter if you close your browser, or log on for more than 15 minutes - unread posts will still show up as unread (unless they've just passed the 3 day limit, then they will be gone).
2. You read some of the unread posts. If you refresh the search results page, then read posts will be marked without the bold. The same happens if you click on a thread link, read the thread, and then use "back" to get back to the list of new posts. New posts since you made the search will now show up. (exactly the same as before)
3. This is where things become different. If you click on the "new posts" link again, then it will do a brand new search where any posts you've read between step 1 and now will be removed from the list. It doesn't matter if you log out or close your browser, and unread posts will still be marked as unread until the 3 day limit is passed.
------------------
So if you want to have the non bold listings of read threads, don't click on the "new posts" link and just refresh the result page or use "back" to return to it. Once you've finished reading, use the "new posts" link again to get new posts (the ones you've read will be gone from the list now).
Basically, the new method removes the problem of losing "read markers" due to expiring sessions (when a session expires - all posts are marked as read). The major change is that if you do a new search for new posts, everything you've read will actually be gone from the list, instead of showing up as non bold for up to 15 minutes (until session expires or you log out).
Also, this is from vB's support forum:
The first time you set this (to database marking) all posts will show up as unread because the database marking is new. Once you mark the forums as read everything will work fine.
Is the length of time posts display as new posts a user changeable setting? Often new posts show as already read by the time I make it thru the whole forum. I notice that on Doom9 and NotebookForum unread posts tend to remain labeled so for several days.
I absolutely hate that aspect of the way Doom9 forums are set up. It seems crazy and counter-intuitive to me for threads to appear as new between visits to the forum when there have been no new posts to those threads. The problem seems to be that "new" and "unread" seem to be used for the same purpose.
I think the old method was better, just that session the time out (900 seconds) was too short if you read slowly. IMHO, I think that ideally there should be no preset time out, and closing the browser or leaving the site altogether should be the indication that a given forum reading session is over and therefore all threads in all forums should be marked as having been read.
I think threads that haven't been read, but don't have any new posts since your last visit are put into the "The threads below have not been updated since your last visit but still contain unread posts" section at the end of the "new posts" search results, so you can easily ignore these.
The posts listed above this section are the only ones that have new posts in them.
