    Stats:

For the week ending June 8, 2019, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.73% vs 57.27%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $20.85 million
DVD sales total spending: $27.94 million

    These stats available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue remained low this week, just slightly above $20 million, as a direct to Blu-ray release was the week's top-selling Blu-ray new release.

Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was that title, but it didn't sell enough copies to get to the top spot, which was still occupied by last week's 'How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World'.

A Madea Family Funeral was close behind in third place, while another new release, The Kid, was in 9th.

A couple of 4K re-releases also made the top 20 this week, including Toy Story in 10th, Toy Story 2 in 15th and Toy Story 3 in 16th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the three 4K re-releases, only 'Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' was made available on UHD. Only 7 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World+
    2. Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles+
    3. A Madea Family Funeral
    4. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part+
    5. Aquaman+
    6. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse+
    7. Bumblebee+
    8. The Upside
    9. The Kid
    10. *Toy Story+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

'Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' had the best BD sales share out of the new releases, with a massive 81.56% of all disc sales for the title being the Blu-ray or 4K editions. It's 4K sales share was 9.08%.

The others didn't do as well, with 'The Kid' managing 42.97% and 'A Madea Family Funeral' at 26%.

This was another "all red week". Hard to pin it on a particular release, as 'A Wrinkle in Time' from this time last year wasn't a big release either - but there were more of these smaller releases last year though.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $8.11m (down 28.0%), with unit sales down 24.4%.

DVD sales decreased by $5.76m (down 17.1%), with unit sales down 16.5%.

This meant $13.87 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 46.22% to 42.73%.

    Top 10:

A very quiet week, possibly due to the Memorial Day public holiday that occurred during the week. Only a single new release was made available during the week, and that was Outlander: Season Four, which finished in second place behind last week's number one 'How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World'.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World' was made available on UHD, and so no new UDH releases in the top 20. Only 5 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World+
    2. Outlander: Season Four

    4. The Upside
    5. Cold Pursuit+
    6. Aquaman+

'Outlander: Season Four' managed a BD sales share of 42.22%. As a comparison to the third season Blu-ray release, it managed a BD sales share of 43.12%, so comparable and negligible differences between the two seasons.

Blu-ray sales increased compared to the previous week thanks to the release of How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. It easily outsold everything else this week, and the 3-movie pack featuring the latest addition to the franchise, How to Train Your Dragon Triple Feature, also charted in the top 10 at 6th.

As for the other new releases, The Upside was in second place, while Isn’t It Romantic in 5th.

And that was it for new releases, not only in the top 10 but also the top 20.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales dropped back down again as this week's new releases, while numerous, weren't popular enough to make a huge difference.

Cold Pursuit was the best selling new release for the week, but it could only sell enough copies to finish in second place.

Places 3rd to 5th were also new releases, in order, Fighting With My Family, Apollo 11 and Happy Death Day 2U.

Outside of the top 10, Backdraft 2 finished in 12th and Triple Threat finished in 13th.

Valentine: The Dark Avenger did not sell enough copies on Blu-ray to get into the Blu-ray top 20, but finished 10th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart.

Despite these new releases, Blu-ray sales fell below $20 million.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Out of the 'Cold Pursuit' was available on UHD. Only 5 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

'Apollo 11' was the next best with 79.41%.

'Fighting With My Family' got 59.29%, with 'Happy Death Day 2U' closely behind at 55.66%. 'Triple Threat' got 50.61%.

'Cold Pursuit' got 47% while 'Valentine: The Dark Avenger' managed only 27%.

The week's only UHD release, 'Cold Pursuit', got a UHD sales share of 8.24%.

Blu-ray and DVD sales improved slightly off of the release of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.

It easily outsold everything else for the week, including the next best selling new release, What Men Want, in third place.

It was then all the way down in 15th for the next new release, The Prodigy.

There were two re-releases on Blu-ray too, in the form of the UHD re-release of Black Hawk Down and the 25th-anniversary edition of Forrest Gump.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the UHD re-releases, only 'The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part' was available on UHD. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales still hovered just below the $20 million dollar mark as we're still in the part of the year not particularly known for having strong sales figures.

New releases, while present, aren't really the sort that would drive sales either.

The best selling of the new releases was Dragged Across Concrete, but it only sold enough copies to finish in 7th place.

The next most popular new release was Serenity in 8th place.

The last new release in the top 20 was Miss Bala in 10th.

And that was it for the quiet week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: None of this week's previously mentioned new releases was available on UHD. Only 6 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Dragon Ball Super: Broly - The Movie
    2. Aquaman+

    Top 10:

With Easter gone, this week becomes the post-Easter sales lull, where Easter combined with a quiet release slate means sales drop through the floor. And this week was no different. Blu-ray weekly revenue dropped below $20 million, and DVD sales weren't much higher either.

There were a bunch of "new on 4K" releases though, but not many actual new releases. The best selling of these new and not quite new releases was Alien: 40th Anniversary Edition.

    Escape Room was in 7th.

Two more 4K re-releases in the form of Captain America: Civil War and Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 8th and 9th respectively.

As post-Easter lulls go, this one was one of the worst in terms of sales. Blu-ray sales were down about $11 million compared to last year's lull and nearly $8 million compared to 2017. The only thing up was the weekly Blu-ray market share, and that's only because DVD sales were even lower.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Obviously, the 4K UHD re-releases were made available on UHD, but 'Escape Room' was not. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Dragon Ball Super: Broly - The Movie
    2. Aquaman+
    3. Glass+
    4. Bumblebee+
    5. *Alien: 40th Anniversary Edition+
    6. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse+
    7. Escape Room
    8. *Captain America: Civil War+
    9. *Captain America: The Winter Soldier+
    10. Avengers: Infinity War+

With all the other "new" releases being Blu-ray/4K only releases, 'Escape Room' was the only one available on both Blu-ray and DVD and it managed a BD sales share of 51.95%.

For UHD sales share, the re-release on 4K of 'Captain America: Civil War' got 70.65%, 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' got 69.99% and 'Alien' was a 100% according to the table below (although you could argue as there were no new non 4K Blu-ray editions issued for these titles, they should all be 100%, meaning they were all 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray exclusive releases).

We're comparing a "normal" week from last year to the post-Easter lull, so not really a fair comparison for this week. Still, an "all red" week narrowly avoided thanks to rising weekly Blu-ray market share.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $6.87m (down 25.9%), with unit sales down 25.2%.

DVD sales decreased by $9.72m (down 27.5%), with unit sales down 26.5%.

This meant $16.59 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 42.87% to 43.41%.

    Top 10:

The annual pre-Easter sales bump is with us. The week before Easter is usually a big one in terms of sales (not quite as big as the winter holidays, but still bigger than usual), and both Blu-ray and DVD recorded much higher sales compared to the previous week.

There was still room for new releases, with Dragon Ball Super: Broly - The Movie beating Glass to the top spot ('Glass' finished in 3rd place on the Blu-ray chart, but 2nd and above 'Dragon Ball Super: Broly' on the combined Blu-ray an DVD chart).

The Walmart exclusive Eastrail 177 Trilogy (featuring 'Unbreakable', 'Split' and 'Glass') also got into the top 20, at 12th.

It was all the way down to 8th place for the next new release, the Blu-ray only Justice League vs. The Fatal Five.

The Kid Who Would Be King debuted to a 13th place finish, and Replicas got 17th.

Putting aside the new releases, it's always worthwhile to compare this week with the same pre-Easter weeks from previous years. There really isn't any point in comparing with last year's pre-Easter week, as that was the week 'Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi' was released - a huge release for 2018. A fairer comparison would be with 2017's pre-Easter week. Unfortunately, it's not a favourable comparison!

Blu-ray sales are down $16 million from 2017, while DVD sales are down $27 million. This helped Blu-ray market share to rise by comparison, but that's only because DVD sales are dropping faster than Blu-ray sales. Now you can argue that in 2017, 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' was released a week prior and so that was the title boosting sales, and that's a fair argument. But it's still very likely that both types of disc sales have dropped in dollar terms compared to years gone by.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Glass', 'The Kid Who Would Be King' and 'Justice League vs. The Fatal Five' all had UHD editions. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Dragon Ball Super: Broly - The Movie
    2. Aquaman+
    3. Glass+
    4. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse+
    5. Bumblebee+
    6. Mary Poppins Returns+

'Dragon Ball Super: Broly - The Movie' had the best BD sales share out of all titles this week, with 83.84% of all disc sales for the title being the Blu-ray edition.

The next best new release was 'Glass', with 61.06%, while 'The Kid Who Would Be King' got 55.13%.

    'Replicas' managed 50.75%.

Both 'Justice League vs. The Fatal Five' and the 'Eastrail 177 Trilogy' were Blu-ray only releases.

For UHD sales share, 'Glass' managed 12.41%, 'Justice League vs. The Fatal Five' got 11.07% while 'The Kid Who Would Be King' had a UHD sales share of 6.44%.

It's a rare "all green" week, where every metric below is better than the one from the same week last year. But this is kind of an unfair comparison (too), because we are comparing a normal week in 2018 with this year's pre-Easter sales bump week.

Blu-ray sales increased by $9.26m (up 34.9%), with unit sales up 36.7%.

DVD sales increased by $1.57m (up 4.2%), with unit sales up 2.0%.

This meant $10.83 million more in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 41.48% to 47.86%.

    Top 10:

It was a pretty quiet week in which the top-selling new release, A Dog’s Way Home, only managed to grab a 4th place finish.

It was still much better than the 8th place finish for Holmes & Watson.

There were three more new releases outside of the top 10, with Welcome to Marwen in 14th, Mirai in 16th and On the Basis of Sex in 17th.

So without any really big releases, Blu-ray weekly revenue took a tumble.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: None of this week's previously mentioned new releases were made available on UHD. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

'Mirai' had the best BD sales share out of all titles, not just new releases, this week with a first week BD sales share of 90.80%.

'Welcome to Marwen' was the next best at 84.99%.

'Holmes & Watson' managed to get 53.83%, while 'On the Basis of Sex' got 47%. 'A Dog’s Way Home' got 45%.

Almost an "all red" week, where every metric below is worse than the one from the same week last year. It was only saved in the end by rising market share. 'The Greatest Showman' was the big release last year responsible for this.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $9.49m (down 22.3%), with unit sales down 25.4%.

DVD sales decreased by $10.2m (down 27.9%), with unit sales down 22.0%.

    Top 10:

Two big-ish, but not quite A-list, releases this week meant that Blu-ray revenue dropped below $40 million dollars but did not fall below $30 million.

This week's top-selling new release and this week's overall top seller was Bumblebee.

In third place was the next new release, The Mule, although it only sold a fraction of the numbers of copies of 'Bumblebee'.

Vice was in 7th, while there were three new releases outside of the top 10. These were Dragon Ball Super: Part 7 in 13th, A Silent Voice: The Movie in 14th and The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot in 17th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Bumblebee' and 'The Mule' both had UHD editions, with the other new releases choosing not to go 4K. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

In terms of BD sales share, it was actually 'A Silent Voice: The Movie' that did the best, not only out of this week's new releases but also out of all titles. 'A Silent Voice: The Movie' got 95.52%.

'Dragon Ball Super: Part 7' was the next best with 76.31%.

Top seller 'Bumblebee' managed 65.01%, while 'Vice' got 54.17%.

Both 'The Mule' and 'The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot' got 40% which is kind of disappointing especially for 'The Mule'.

For the two UHD new releases, 'Bumblebee' had a UHD sales share of 14.49% while 'The Mule' got 5.61%.

The same week last year was the post-Easter lull, a quiet sales week due to the holidays. Easter comes much later this year, so a proper comparison will happen at that time.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $4.44m (up 14.4%), with unit sales up 10.7%.

Another big release this week in the form of Aquaman, which helped Blu-ray revenue stay above the $40 million dollar mark. Weekly Blu-ray market share stayed above the 50% mark again and was only down slightly due to an increase in DVD sales.

'Aquaman' outsold 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' by quite a big margin, and it was an even bigger margin between 'Aquaman' and the next best selling new release, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes in 5th place.

The 30th-anniversary edition of Pet Sematary, released on UHD for the first time, re-entered the top 100 at 8th. In 9th place was another new release, Second Act.

And finally in 14th place was the last new release in the top 20, If Beale Street Could Talk in 14th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Aquaman' and 'Pet Sematary' both had UHD editions, with the other new releases missing out. 8 out of this week's top 10 had a UHD edition.

    Top seller 'Aquaman' managed 66.32%.

'If Beale Street Could Talk' got 46.21%, while 'Second Act' got 45.12%.

'Aquaman' was also available on 3D, and it got a 3D sales share of 1.06%, which is not great but still better than most of the other recent 3D releases.

For UHD sales share, 'Pet Sematary' got an impressive 38.75%, while 'Aquaman' got 14.23%, which is not too bad.

Despite the big release this week, there was an even bigger release this time last year in the form of 'Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi'. Not one, but two big movie releases helped to push Blu-ray revenue above the $40 million dollar mark again and helped weekly Blu-ray market share reach one of its highest points ever.

Nearly 56% of all disc sales belong to Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray standalone or combo packages, and that was largely thanks to this week's number one and two releases, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Mary Poppins Returns.

The two top sellers were neck and neck in terms of units sold, and selling way above anything else this week, including last week's number one, 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald'.

There were three other new releases, but they only sold enough copies to get into the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, not the Blu-ray top 20. There was Big Kill in 14th, The Final Wish in 18th and The Quake in 20th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only the top two sellers, 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' and 'Mary Poppins Returns', had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions. Thanks to this week's top two releases, every single title in the top 10 had an UHD edition.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse+

While 'Spider-Man' may have won the sales war, it was 'Mary Poppins Returns' that had the higher BD sales share, with a massive 78.38% of buyers opting for the Blu-ray or UHD combo editions (with only 21.62% buying the DVD only edition).

To be fair, 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' wasn't far behind either, with a BD sales share of 78.01%.

'The Quake' got 34.10%, which probably explains why it didn't get into the Blu-ray top 20. The same for 'Big Kill' (25.26%) and 'The Final Wish' (24.59%).

On UHD, the gorgeous visuals on 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse' helped it to easily beat 'Mary Poppins Returns' in UHD sales share, with 16.33% compared to "just" 8.27%.

Another big release this week, but it failed to take Blu-ray revenue above the $40 million dollar mark despite Blu-ray sales rising compared to the previous week.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald was that big release, but a U.S. box office taking of $159.56 million just wasn't big enough to make a huge difference on Blu-ray it seems. It did help the first 'Fantastic Beasts' movie to make a return to the top 10, at 10th place.

Still, it did a lot better on Blu-ray than the second placed (and also new) Mortal Engines.

Controversial Oscar Best Picture winner Green Book was the next new release in 4th.

And that was actually it in terms of new releases, not only in the top 10 but in the entire top 20.

'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' was also available on 3D, but it fared no better than the other recent 3D releases, with a 3D sales share of only 0.94%.

On UHD, it was 'Mortal Engines' that did the best, with a UHD sales share of 14.00%. 'Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald' got 11.30%, while 'Green Book' had 7.48%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue dropped back below the $40 million dollar mark again, after sales of last week's top seller, 'Ralph Breaks the Internet', dropped back down. But it still sold enough to retain the top spot.

Creed II was this week's big release, but it didn't sell enough copies to knock 'Ralph' off top spot.

In fifth place was another new release, Instant Family.

Oscar favourite The Favourite was the next new release in 8th place, while The Vanishing rounded off the top 10, in 10th place.

Outside of the top 10, Ben Is Back finished in 14th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Despite the numerous new releases, only 'Creed II' was made available on UHD. 7 out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Of all the new releases mentioned above, 'The Favourite' actually had the best BD sales share, 55.26%. It was just above the sales share for 'Creed II', 53.41%.

Now below the 50% mark, 'The Vanishing' got 48.60%, while 'Instant Family' managed 45.41%.

And in 20th place was 'Ben Is Back' with 31.47%.

For the week's sole UHD release in the top 20, 'Creed II', it managed a UHD sales share of 10.93%.

None of this week's releases could match the huge release from this time last year, 'Thor: Ragnarok'. Which is why we have an all red week where every metric below compares negatively to the same week last year.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $26.27m (down 45.1%), with unit sales down 40.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $13.65m (down 25.1%), with unit sales down 24.8%.

This meant $39.92 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 51.71% to 43.98%.

    Top 10:

A big release and several big (Blu-ray only) re-releases helped Blu-ray revenue push above the $40 million mark, and helped weekly Blu-ray market share cross over the 50% threshold.

Ralph Breaks the Internet did more than $200 million at the box office and definitely counts as a big release. It easily outsold everything else this week, including the re-release (on Blu-ray and 4K) of The Little Mermaid.

Also coming to 4K for the first time, and this time via a different studio is Captain America: The First Avenger, which came in 8th place. Those who follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe will know that the first Captain America movie was released by Paramount before Disney gobbled everything up - it's now Disney's turn to re-release this film as a ''Cinematic Universe Edition", and also available for the first time in 4K.

In 9th place was another new release, Mary Queen of Scots, while outside the top 10 saw Between Worlds finish in 11th place and The Possession of Hannah Grace finish 13th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Ralph Breaks the Internet', 'The Little Mermaid', 'Captain America: The First Avenger', and 'Mary Queen of Scots' were all available on UHD. Every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Ralph Breaks the Internet+
    2. *The Little Mermaid+
    3. Bohemian Rhapsody+
    4. A Star is Born+
    5. Robin Hood+
    6. The Grinch+

'Ralph Breaks the Internet' did well on Blu-ray, with a first week Blu-ray sales share of 79.09%.

'Mary Queen of Scots' managed 68.48%, while 'Between Worlds' failed to get over 50% with 48.05%.

'The Possession of Hannah Grace' got 42.51%.

All the other new releases were Blu-ray only releases.

On UHD, 'Captain America: The First Avenger' had a huge 4K sales share of 85.87% (meaning almost every copy sold this week was for the 4K edition), while 'The Little Mermaid' had to settle for a UHD sales share of 21.32% (which is still not bad, but perhaps not as good as a 4K re-release was expected to be).

'Mary Queen of Scots' got a UHD sales share of 10.7% while this week's top seller, 'Ralph Breaks the Internet', managed 8.35%.
