    Stats:

For the week ending January 27, 2018, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 39.08% vs 60.92%

    Percentage of revenue (NPD):
    Blu-ray vs Ultra HD Blu-ray vs DVD: 51.1% vs 5.7% vs 43.2%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $23.04 million
DVD sales total spending: $35.92 million

    These stats available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD revenue both saw declines, with Blu-ray weekly market share also dropping back compared to recent weeks, "thanks" largely to this week's lackluster release slate.

Geostorm was the week's top selling new release, but it failed to beat both 'Blade Runner 2049' and 'Dunkirk' to the top two spots.

Jigsaw wasn't too far behind in 4th place.

Then it's all the way down to 13th place for the next new release, Thank You for Your Service.

And that was it in terms of new releases.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Of this week's new releases, only one, 'Jigsaw' was available on UHD. A couple of recent big releases made a return to the top 10, and as most of these had UHD editions, it was almost a clean sweep on this front. So out of the top 10, nine titles had UHD editions. Data provided by NPD (see graphics above) shows that UHD sales share was at 5.7% for this week (data gathered by the NPD differs from the other data here and is only for the top 50 best selling titles. The other data here are gathered by Media Play News Research) .

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Blade Runner 2049+
    2. Dunkirk+
    3. Geostorm
    4. Jigsaw+
    5. It+
    6. Wonder Woman+
    7. Kingsman: The Golden Circle+
    8. The LEGO Ninjago Movie+
    9. Despicable Me 3+
    10. Spider-Man: Homecoming+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

'Jigsaw' actually saw a higher BD sales share than 'Geostorm', but only just, 52% compared to 51%. 'Geostorm' also had a 3D edition, but it was a case of "why did they even bother", as the 3D edition had a 3D sales share of 0.1% (or to put it in other words, out of every 1000 copies of 'Geostorm' sold, only one copy was for the 3D edition).

'Thank You for Your Service' had a BD sales share of 49%.

'Jigsaw' did well on UHD, scoring a first week UHD sales share of 7.10%.

An 'all red week' saved by rising Blu-ray market share (basically meaning that DVD revenue dropped faster than Blu-ray revenue).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $2.33m (down 9.2%), while DVD sales decreased by $11.72m (down 24.6%) producing $14.05 million less in combined revenue.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 34.75% to 39.08%.

Outside of the top 20, Beyond Skyline was in 13th while Loving Vincent was in 17th.

'Happy Death Day' had BD sales share of 53.64%, while 'The Snowman' managed 51.33%.

The other new releases didn't get into the BD sales share top 20, but 'Loving Vincent' managed 42%, 'Beyond Skyline' got 38% and 'Gangster Land' got 30%.

    Top 10:

An A-list release in the form of It helped Blu-ray revenue recover and weekly Blu-ray market share reach above 40%.

Two other new releases occupying the second and third spots also helped, with My Little Pony: The Movie in second and The Foreigner in third.

Outside of the top 10, there was one more new release, Marshall in 12th. Friend Request came 18th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart, but did not get into the Blu-ray top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Of this week's previously mentioned new releases, only 'It' was made available on UHD. So out of the top 10, seven titles all had UHD editions. As a new feature to this analysis, a new graphic has been added above using information provided by NPD (which differs from the other data here, gathered by Media Play News Research). It shows that UHD sales share was at 6.8% for this week.

    'Friend Request' got 31%.

'It' managed a UHD sales share of 11.68%.

    Top 10:

The first week of the year is here, and again, a traditionally quiet week. As a result, there was only one new release, although it did manage to find its way to the top of the charts. American Made easily outsold everything else, including the recent top seller 'Dunkirk'.

Weekly Blu-ray revenue was dangerously close to falling behind $20 million for the first time in a long time.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'American Made' was released on UHD. So out of the top 10, nine titles all had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

    Top 10:

A traditionally quiet week after the busy holiday sales period, with Christmas being included in the week, sales generally are a bit weaker, and so are the new releases.

The Mountain Between Us was the top selling new release, but it only managed to get to 6th place on the Blu-ray sales chart.

There were 4 more new releases in the top 20 though, but those other ones sold even less copies. Jeepers Creepers III got as high as 13th, while in 14th, it was the 2017 remake of Flatliners. Brawl in Cell Block 99 was in 19th.

Comparing this last week of 2017 with the last week of 2016, DVD revenue was down 15% whereas Blu-ray revenue was down 10%. Not as bad as last week, but the downward trend is still pretty clear to see.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Out of the four new releases listed above, two, 'The Mountain Between Us' and 'Brawl in Cell Block 99' were made available on UHD. So out of the top 10, nine titles all had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

None of the new releases got over the magic 50% BD sales mark, meaning their DVD editions sold more copies than their Blu-ray editions. 'The Mountain Between Us' had the best BD sales share of all the new releases, with 48%, followed by 'Brawl in Cell Block 99' with 46%, 'Flatliners' with 44% and 'Jeepers Creepers III' with 33%.

Of the releases with UHD editions, 'Brawl in Cell Block 99' got 7.26% while 'The Mountain Between Us' managed 4%.

    Top 10:

We are at the peak of the holiday sales period, and both Blu-ray and DVD recorded some healthy results, but perhaps not in comparison to holidays past.

Dunkirk was the headlining release for the week, easily getting to the top of the Blu-ray sales charts. There was only room for another new release in the top 20 this week, with The LEGO Ninjago Movie coming in at 4th.

That was it in terms of new releases, but being the holidays, several of the past few week's biggest sellers all stayed and sold well the top 10.

As a comparison to last year though, sales are dramatically down. Both Blu-ray and DVD revenue declined about 31% compared to the same week last year, and you can even argue that this week's 'Dunkirk' was ostensibly a much bigger release than last year's 'The Magnificent Seven'.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both 'Dunkirk' and 'The LEGO Ninjago Movie' were available on UHD. So out of the top 10, eight titles all had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

Both of these titles were available on UHD, with 'The LEGO Ninjago Movie' also available on 3D. 'Dunkirk' had a UHD sales share of 13.88%, while 'The LEGO Ninjago Movie' only got 2%. The Ninjago movie's 3D sales share wasn't much better, at only 0.59%.

An "all red" week in one of the most important sales weeks of the year isn't good news for Blu-ray (and DVD), but with almost $90 million less in sales, the decline can't be chalked up to different release line-ups.

    Stats:

For the week ending December 16, 2017, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue:
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 38.39% vs 61.61%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $56.48 million
DVD sales total spending: $90.63 million

    These stats available from here:

    Home Media Magazine

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue rose above $50 million, and DVD sales went above $90 million, not thanks to a particular big release, but rather, the holiday sales period.

The biggest new release of the week was actually Kingsman: The Golden Circle, but it failed to unseat last week's number one, Despicable Me 3. A 2-movie collection of both Kingsman movies was also available on Blu-ray and Ultra HD Blu-ray, and it did well enough to get into 9th place.

The only other new release in the top 20 was Game of Thrones: The Complete Seventh Season, in 3rd place.

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' makes its way back into the top 10 thanks to the recent release of the new Star Wars movie in theaters.

But while revenue was up compared to recent weeks, compared to the same week last year, things are still looking pretty bad for both Blu-ray and DVD sales. Blu-ray revenue was down nearly 38% compared to the same week last year, with DVD revenue down 28%. Truth be told, the drop had more to do with this week's headlining new release, 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle', not really matching up to last year's new release, 'Suicide Squad', but the revenue decline (more than $70 million just this week alone) is not a once off - it has been the case for most of the year!

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' was made available on UHD, as was the 2-movie collection. Of the top 10, eight titles all had UHD editions - the two that didn't were the new Game of Thrones season box set and 'Rogue One', which Disney has yet to decide if it wants to re-release on UHD some time in 2018.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' got a BD sales share of 66.73%, with a UHD sales share of 8.7%. 'Kingsman 2-Movie Collection', being a Blu-ray exclusive, did not have a BD sales share (or rather, it had a 100% share), but its UHD sales share topped the charts at 21.55%.

'Game of Thrones: The Complete Seventh Season' had a BD sales share of 54.19%, almost identical to the previous season's 54.91%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD revenue was only slightly below that set last week by Cyber Monday, and this was largely thanks to the release of an A-List title in the form of Despicable Me 3.

There was only one other new release in the entire top 20, and that was the second placed American Assassin, which was quite a bit behind 'Despicable Me 3' in terms of actual sales.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both new releases had UHD version. Of the top 10, eight titles all had UHD editions, let down by two Christmas favourites, 'Elf' and 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation', that aren't yet available in 4K.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Despicable Me 3+
    2. American Assassin+
    3. Spider-Man: Homecoming+
    4. Cars 3+
    5. The Hitman's Bodyguard+
    6. Wonder Woman+
    7. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2+
    8. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets+
    9. Elf
    10. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

'Despicable Me 3' had a BD sales share of 61.52%, and a UHD sales share of 3.99%, while 'American Assassin' managed 55.59% on Blu-ray and a very good 8.16% on UHD.

Following last week's Black Friday sales, we have the important, but smaller Cyber Monday sales event. As with Black Friday, studios tend to avoid these times when it comes to releasing new titles for fear it may get lost in the sales mayhem, and this week was no exception.

The only new release was Logan Lucky, which got as high as 8th place. 'The Hitman's Bodyguard' jumped to 5th place, after having failed to secure a top 10 finish last week.

Comparing this Cyber Monday to the last one, both Blu-ray and DVD sales dropped quite significantly, a worrying sign considering Cyber Monday is also a very important sales event for physical media. Total weekly revenue dropped by $33.93 million.

Both Blu-ray and DVD sales dropped by about 21%, which meant that weekly Blu-ray market share remained largely the same.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The sole new release in the top 20, 'Logan Lucky', did have an UHD version. In terms of the number of titles in the top 10 that have UHD editions, I think we have a first, in that every single one is available on UHD. 10 out of 10!

    Top 10:

It's Black Friday week again, where Blu-ray and DVD sales rise dramatically in this once a year sales event. More interestingly, it's an interesting event that can be used to compared year on year sales results, for both Blu-ray and DVD.

But before we get to that, there's the matter of new releases, and most of the time, there aren't any due to the fact that most people are too busy picking up bargains to care about new releases. Certainly, there weren't any in the top 10, but The Hitman's Bodyguard was brave enough to release this week, and it came 18th.

But it was the discounted titles that were the popular picks, with Wonder Woman topping the sales charts. Checking our Amazon price history graph (using the link just provided), the Black Friday pricing for this movie was only $9, where it is normally around $20. Not a bad deal at all!

Spider-Man: Homecoming was another title that was discounted to $9, and it was second place.

Other re-entries into the top 10, thanks to discounting, include The Lego Batman Movie, Trolls, Kong: Skull Island (which dropped to an incredibly low $7.96 for BF) and Transformers: The Last Knight ($7.65!).

But the overall result is one that's somewhat disappointing. Blu-ray revenue failed to break through the $100 million barrier like it has since 2012, while DVD revenue was also down by quite a bit compared to BF 2016.

Blu-ray sales dropped by 8.5% while DVD sales dropped by 15.7%. These drops are larger than what was recorded last year, when Blu-ray even managed to record a sales increased compared to BF 2015. Total revenue was down $36.01 million.

Note that these stats do not include Cyber Monday sales, the stats for which comes next week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Nine out of the top 10 all had UHD editions ('Stranger Things' had to go and ruin the perfect run), although most of these editions weren't part of heavy discounting. This is up from the 7 titles in the top 10 last year, so if nothing else, UHD has made some progress this year.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Wonder Woman+
    2. Spider-Man: Homecoming+

Despite not being heavily discounted like their Blu-ray counterparts, the top sellers on BF all did fairly well on UHD. 'Wonder Woman' got 9.19%, 'Transformers: The Last Knight' got 9.14% and 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' got 9.93%.

Blu-ray revenue was down compared to last week as this week's new releases weren't good enough. They weren't even good enough to unseat last week's number one, 'Cars 3'.

New release Atomic Blonde came closest, securing a close second place.

There were further new releases in 5th and 7th, in Wind River and The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature.

Failing to make the Blu-ray top 20, but managed to get in to the combined Blu-ray and DVD top 20, was Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You in 17th and Amityville: The Awakening in 20th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Of this week's above mentioned new releases, only 'Atomic Blonde' was available on UHD. This meant that 8 out of the top 10 had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions.

Blu-ray revenue rose almost $10 million compared to the previous week largely on the back of one new release, Cars 3. It was by far the most popular release of the week, easily outselling last week's number one, 'The Dark Tower'

You have to go down to 7th for the next new release, which was Your Name.

In 9th place was Westworld: Season One, followed by The Glass Castle.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both 'Cars 3' (another Disney 4K release!) and 'Westworld: Season One' were available on UHD. This meant that 6 out of the top 10 had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray weekly revenue and market share dropped compared to the previous week, due to a relatively quiet release slate for the week ending November 4, 2017.

The Dark Tower was the most notable of the (only) two new releases in the top 20, and it was well received enough to be the top seller for the week.

The other new release, settling in at sixth place, was Kidnap.

Halloween favourite 'Hocus Pocus' still commands a place in the top 10, but maybe for not much longer.

And that was it for the week!

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Of this week's notable new release, only 'The Dark Tower' was available on UHD. This meant that 6 out of the top 10 had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions.

A big release, but not quite A-list, in War for the Planet of the Apes saw Blu-ray revenue take a dip compared to the previous week, and for weekly Blu-ray market share to retreat back below 40%. The release of the last in the new Planet of the Apes trilogy also helped to sell the Blu-ray exclusive trilogy box set, which sold enough copies to get to 11th place.

The critically panned The Emoji Movie - it's hard to tell if the movie's low IMDb rating is deserved or not, but it did well enough on Blu-ray to get to third place.

In 4th place was another new release, Annabelle: Creation.

Slowing 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' sales and with 'War for the Planet of the Apes' not being as big a box office hit as the Spider-man reboot, explains this week's lower results.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both 'War for the Planet of the Apes' and the 'Planet of the Apes Trilogy' box set were available as UHD releases, as well as 'The Emoji Movie'. This meant that 6 out of the top 10 had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue and market share jumped distinctly up compared to the last week, thanks largely to the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming.

It was the clear top seller for the week, a long way ahead of the second placed, and also newly released, Girls Trip.

With season 2 of Stranger Things being released, Stranger Things: Season 1 was made available to buy as a special collector's edition at Target. Despite the limited release (only at Target, and only as a Blu-ray combo box set), it sold enough copies to get to 6th place on the Blu-ray sales chart. Totally tubular!

In 10th place was the next new release, Batman vs. Two-Face, and in 14th place was the last of the new releases in the top 20, American Gods: Season 1.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' was available on UHD for this week's top 20 releases. 6 out of the top 10 had Ultra HD Blu-ray editions.

'Spider-Man: Homecoming' had a monster of a first week BD sales share, with 79.13% - it's impressive given the sales volume too. Selling much fewer copies but still doing great in terms of BD sales share was 'Batman vs. Two-Face', which got 74.24%.

'American Gods: Season 1' had a great debut on BLu-ray as well, with 70.43%.

    'Girls Trip' got 45%.

For 3D and UHD sales share, 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' had both types of editions, with the 3D sales share coming in at 4.10%, and the UHD sales share at a very respectable 13.20%.
